Home Cultivation a health hazard?
    #1315774 - 02/18/03 02:26 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

It seems like having lots of shrooms producing millions of spores in your home may not be such a great idea? If a person had a compromised immune system, would they be at risk of having their lungs colonized by mycelium? Most healthy people can easily cope with fungal spores being inhaled, each of us inhale spores all day. But what about the sheer number of spores produced in the average terrarium? Would all spores have the same antigens, or would a person have to cope with every few different spores?

nah its cool, most peple pic the shrooms before they make spores, plus the spores are stuck in the grow chamber

What about when people are fanning their shrooms? Spores are light enough to stay suspended in air for a very long time, and the stalks that attach them to the mushroom cap are very easily broken, sending spores into the air with a minimum of wind.

enen with compromised amune systems, the spores are not gonna grow on your lungs, they are not parasitic, and they wouldnt have any of the proper nutrients in there anyways

God willing.  We can only dream...

Seriously though, these are not harmful fungi spores.  No worry.

There is a hazard with contamination, if your setup gets badly contaminated and you take a big wiff of that air, your likely to get very sick.

Aspergillus spp. are notorious for their health hazards. This genera of fungi produce the some of the most carcinogenic substances known to humans. They also cause aspergilliosis, a colonization of the alveoli (air sacs) is human lungs. This is sometimes known as hay workers lung or mushroom workers lung. That is bad fucking shit.

Off topic: There is a species of the yeast Candida that actually causes constant intoxication by ethanol if it colonises your stomach/intestines.

Btw: The toxins created by those fungi are called Aflatoxins.

The people who are infected by that yeast usu. don't like it much.

If you are concerned , or have people in the house who have and are the "Allergy" type , change the filters in your ac/heating system more frequently . 1 a month is normal , so go to every 2 weeks . Also buy a better quality filter (most folks use cheapies , poly fiber style or furnace style ) , the "pleated" filters , that look like cottony material , those are the best . 3m sells a great one that removes things as small as 3 microns , but they are way expensive , like 15$ each .

PS If myc grows in my lungs , I'll donate them to the shroomery when I die !  :smirk:
