why is prostitution still ilegal?

I was wondering that when I read that craigslist has closed its adult services section. As far as I can tell there is no real reason except our bible thumping roots here in america. A system like the brothel system in nevada is a great example of how it could/should be, you cut out the exploitation from pimps and johns, ensure both the protitutes and johns safety from disease, much like the war on drugs, legalization and regulation seems like a much safer and much less exspensive way of doing things

Because women are more interested in bitching about abortion rights (which they already have) than prostitution rights (which they dont have). Its illegality is a function of feminist hypocrisy.

You should look up sex trafficking. A lot of prostitutes are basically slaves that are forced to work by their pimps, and are often trafficked in from other countries. And before you say that legalization would solve that, I should point out that Germany and the Netherlands experienced an increase in sex trafficking after they legalized prostitution. Of course, it should also be noted that New Zealand has had great success in reducing sex trafficking since legalizing. I personally do believe that prostitution should be legal, and that the Nevada model does look like a promising one, but it's not as black-and-white an issue as you might think.

I'd think legalization would just increase the spread of STDs. It's common that prostitutes are involved in drugs, and the government doesn't want to be seen a propagator of STDs or drug use. JMHO anyway.

People are disturbed by their own humanity, I think... as well as usually uneducated. However I've met educated people who are still against it.

that's stupid anywhere with legal brothels is going to have way less of an STD problem than in a black market system it's exactly the same reason that if weed were leglized, nobody could make a living selling schwag

Thailand has legal prostitution and a huge STD problem. That's why it's not just a matter of if you legalize, but how you legalize. That's why Nevada requires condoms, and customers have to have their "equipment" checked out before using their services.

alright, fair point, but the fact that it's possible to do legalization in a foolish way doesn't make illegality a preferable alternative

That and taxes. The government sees no taxes on revenue from Prostitution. Everything is taxes man. Marijuana is illegal yet there's headshops everywhere. Such a joke.

No. Brothels in Nevada are taxed. To suggest that somehow government couldn't tax prostitution(or pot, for that matter) is ridiculous. By keeping prostitution illegal, government is missing out on potential tax revenue.

Street prostitution should be illegal and stay illegal, it's dangerous to people's health and safety to just say ALL forms of sex for money are allowed.
What should be legal, however, and implemented as the alternative is brothels and "cat-houses", where disease-testing is standard and bouncers are an earshot away in case anybody gets too out-of-hand.
