All you need to do is soak the rye berries overnight, strain them and let them sit out for about a day in the jar.  That usually has worked for me in the past and they've been just perfect as to moisture content of the berries.  Not too wet and they don't clump at all after pc'ing.  One time I didn't let them dry out, however; and they did contaminate in a bulk tek because too much water was gathering up on the sides.  But that was only 1 out of 20 bulk spawn runs

dump them and try this.

250 ml of Rye grain.
210 ml of water.
Leave sitting for 24 hours so that the endo-spores germinate.

I use a home made tyvek filter under the lid...with a 11/32" hole in the jar lid...this hole is for air exchange...Hole is taped with masking tape during pressure cooking.

If I'm doing a multi-spore inoculation...I put another hole near the outer edge of the jar lid....7/32" so I can use a syringe and cover the hole with a round bandaid after inoculation....this hole is covered with masking tape during pressure cooking.

Then pressure cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Let it cool down for a few hours and then shake the jars up really good.

Then let the jars completely cool down.
Shake them up again.
Then inoculate the jars with a multi-spore syringe, or agar, or mycelium syringe, or a grain to grain transfer.
Then shake again...unless I'm using agar wedges.

Since doing Rye Grain this way I have had almost zero contams.
Only bad jars I had were from a bad syringe I got from a trade!

good luck!

I use Pennington's brand Wild Bird Seed from Wal-Mart.

25lb for $4.95
It has Bird-Kote, but I have noticed absolutely no problems with the coating, so it seems that its simply nutritional, not fungicidal.
