i got my cakes of gt out... how often should they get light?

Just whenever you check them or fan them give them like 2 minutes of light. I end up giveing them light about 10 times a day for 2 minutes a peice. They pin and fruit fine (I dont do cakes but casings).

If you just got your cakes out and they haven't started pinning yet, try dunking them to get much better yields the first time around. Plenty of people on this and other boards would agree that a first flush dunking is the path to success. As to the lighting, you can do any type of lighting schedule you like really. Some say they grow faster in the dark while Anno and his time lapse video showed that they grow towards the light more than people think. If you left it on and it was not too hot for them, you would have better looking shrooms that grow up instead of around and out to the side. GL.

yes, casings are much different than cakes. Cakes are simply the spawn which is birthed out of the jar and then allowed to fruit. A casing would be carried a step further and you could crush up the cake into small pieces of mycelium and then mix it with a nutrient rich compost or vermiculite. The casing layer is then added onto the mixture of compost/vermiculite once it is fully colonized on the surface. The casing layer provides humidity and moisture to the batch and allows you more surface area for growing pins. I might not have explained it clear enough but heres a basic link to a tek that uses crumbled pf style cakes:

You should definitely dunk your cakes... There are many ways to dunk.. Some options that my dog tested with good results were:

1). Place your cakes in big ziplock bags, and fill with water and squeeze out remaining air, he used regular tap water without sterilizing at all. Some people use mineral water, some use distilled..

2). Any Tupperware container or bowl. Place cakes in container fill with water of your choice and cover with saran wrap or foil.

With either of these methods, you can choose to go for 12-24 hrs.. He went with 12 hours and all his cakes exploded with pins 3-5 days after dunking.. Also some people dab off the cakes with towels or whatever... Don't bother with that, just place into your terrarium or casing. I also recommend placing your cakes in the fridge while dunking. Cold shock simultaneously.....

You can either dunk now, with the pins.. It doesn't really hurt the pins.... Or you can let the first flush go, since it is already pinning and then dunk after the first flush is picked off... Your choice... Don't worry so much and just experiment... Just remember to do a spore print when you get your fruits, that way you can keep it going and keep learning....

I wouldn't dunk if you already have pins.
Just inject 10 cc of sterile water into each cake with a sterile syringe.
Then repeat in a few days.
Inject into several places in the cake.

If one was to do 1/2 pint cakes, would it be reasonable to dunk them while they are still cakes and cold shock them also, then crumble them into a casing?

Also, is casing good with creeper and golden teacher strains? Just wonderin.

What is the difference between casing using the 50/50 method and like the SOS tek, besides the fact you let them colonize more in the cups?
