You don't think the new pup growing in between the two stems will cause too much trouble karode?

Not really. It might seem a little squashed but they tend to sort themselves out as they grow. The only thing I'd watch for is emerging spines puncturing neighbouring flesh. I cut away any spines that are/will stab other parts to avoid secondary infections.
