Tilapia
    #13146617 - 09/04/10 11:44 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Does anyone actually like this fish? I'm a fish eater, but tilapia sucks.
Maybe it's not that it tastes so bad really.. but it doesn't taste like fish.
And they eat shit

It's super cheap, so it can feed families on zip.

Had some breaded tilapia at a sushi joint the other day that was delicious.

As long as it's cooked right it's fine. It's really cheap too.

Tilapia with spices and lemon juice on top is pretty decent. I dig.

I eat fish, being a ocean kayak fisherman the opportunity arises often  I am also a chef, and seafood is one of my passions. I personally, think that tilapia is an under-rated fish. Ofcourse people love it, it has a great flaky texture, very mild in flavor, it is versatile in cooking applications, and is fairly affordable. I eat tilapia at home often, as it is the only fish my girlfriend will eat... I don't mind it one bit.

Most of the tilapia you eat in the states are raised domestic farms, where they are fed high protein fishmeal for optimal health and growth. Most omnivore fish will eat edible wastes, but there main diet consists of larvae, insects, small shellfish, baitfish, and plants.

I like tilapia, but then again I also eat sardines out of a can. Breaded and baked at 400F for 25 minutes it's pretty good.

How is Tilapia underrated? Isn't it like the 2nd or 3rd most consumed fish in America.. due partially to its cheapness? I can't go anywhere without seeing it.
I don't hate it really, I just don't like it compared to say, mahi mahi, or a nice salmon. And I can't get over that they are bottom feeders for some reason.
Also I thought I read something a while back that compared tilapia to hamburgers and hot dogs in terms of nutrition.. apparently it has much higher omega 6s as opposed to omegas 3s, like you would see in red meat instead of most fish. So it may be cheaper than most fish but it also doesn't have the same nutrition and ratio of fatty acids as other fish either.

farm raised tilapia eats fish chow, same as dog food but formulated for
fish, tilapia also covers about 200 species of fish, many eat other fish
but others as you said eat shit and everything else, there's no
consistency in wild caught and the farm raised tends to taste like dog food

They eat this a lot in the Philippines.  I don't really care for it, kind of like carp with a little bit of meat on the bones.

in the past it was always considered a trash fish but they've discovered a
way to market it based on how cheap it is, restaurants started carrying
them and cover it in all kinds of shit to hide the flavor

Stupid people will buy anything if it's marketed correctly, ex bottled water, barack obama, iphones, etc.

yeah you need to cook it a certain way for it to taste good i microwave it covered with wax paper and it tastes a lot better than if it was cooked in an oven or something..

it like explodes in the microwave, and becomes all flaky and that makes the texture really awesome and crispy instead of gummy and tastes like 10x more flavorfull than if cooked any way else in my experience

any fish can be made to taste decent if you smother it in enough butter and lemon and spices or whatever
A good quality fish should taste good raw :yesnod: See: Yellowtail.  I would never eat tilapia raw.

Never heard of this Tilapia business, but where I live we get a lot of fresh Salmon from local rivers and Alaska so I see no need to diverge :vaped:
