'McKennaii' Pre grown mycelluim brick - 1st flush... Pics & Questions

A few weeks ago I bought a pre grown mycellium brick from a vendor in the Netherlands. I know it was a bit of a waste of money, but I had doubts if my measly one jar (that i inoculated with 1cc of Eq spores after finding it buried at the back of my cupboard during a clear out) would take off and colonise. So I bought a pre grown brick just in case. :smile:

The strain is supposedly 'McKenaii'. I and you both know that this is a load of old tosh, but being a naturally inquisitive chap, I decided to buy it and see what it was all about. Here is what they have to say about it on their website....

'McKENNAII

The McKennaii might be even stronger than the popular but difficult to grow Hawaiian (Copelandia cyanescens). No doubt the McKennaii is the strongest cubensis in our catalog. This one is for the more visualy interested. Dark brown caps with an odd shape and thick sturdy stems.'

So, after dunking I placed the brick in my fruiting chamber and after a week or so, this is the result. Is it possible to tell what 'strain' a mushroom is just by looking at it? Come to think of it, is there any way to tell? Spore print perhaps?



Before anyone says anything about me having no holes in my fruiting chamber... hold it!! The last time I grew was a couple of years ago and the shotgun tek was not around (or atleast I didn't know of it anyway) so this was the next best thing!


And just in case anyone wondered... the one lonely jar of EQ has now turned into two and they are now nearly 100% colonised. I wasn't happy with the length of time it was taking the 1st jar as most of the spore solution was on one side as i had very little left. So I prepared another jar, opened the 1st one, took a small amount of mycellium with sterilised tweezers and placed it into a new syringe... add sterile water - violla! The second jar is now 100% complete and has been for days.. i'm just waiting for the 1st one to catch up now!

Looks like some nice p. cubensis. The name of the strain is just a selling point for the vendor. They could make up any 'strain' name and sell it that way and there's no way to tell the difference because it's still going to be multispore cubensis.
Now, as for this statement..

McKENNAII is suppost to be PE. thats why the potency claim but doesnt look liek  PE to me. . good luck
