marijuana ..the elephant in the room...
    #13143222 - 09/03/10 02:10 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

the titular :boobs: elephant has a double meaning...

this fall..a number of various different marijuana legalization initiatives will be on the ballot in their respective states.. most notably californias' prop19...

however..all the threads on these votes (as well as off-site discussions on this topic) seem to presume that they will happen in a vacuum.. independent of the current political environment...that kind of thinking is of course beyond rediculous...but OTOH..there would be no topic of discussion once the political reality is taken into account..since the outcome is already predetermined...

and thats the elephant in the room...

"predetermined" might have been the wrong word...what i meant was that only one outcome is possible when the politics are that far on the right...

much of the right supports legalization

it's usually the liberal bleeding heart, think of the children, left that keeps it banned

the harrison act was a tax..not a war..on drugs...

trying to pin down the origin of the drug war is like trying to pin down the first human species...i still claim that reagan launched the current drug war...

but even if you want to start with harrison.. what matters is that it was still the same southern conservatives (including some northerners..such as harrison) responsible for the harrison act that are about to once again seize power...it is also worth pointing out that back in harrisons' day..the southern conservatives were the democrats.. whereas today their repugnicans...

which opened the door to tax evasion charges, which eventually led the the RICO act

you'd still be wrong, I believe the definition of stupid is when someone
does the same things over and over again and each time they expect the
outcome to be different

so wait, the party that wanted to keep blacks ignorant and dependent by
force is different than the party that wants them to remain ignorant and
dependent with the help of welfare... the same party that now cranks out
notable anti drug/anti submarine legislators like Joe Biden. Maybe you
dont realize it yet but nothing has really changed since 1900 within the parties

you just keep on defending the party of 'uh...'

"War on Drugs" was a Richard Nixon thing, which was for the most part undone by Carter, and then put back in force big time by Reagan after Nancy got strung out on downers and went to the Betty Ford clinic, emerging later as an anti-drug fanatic.

yes..the rôles of the political parties were somewhat reversed in 1900...but thats beside the point...the point is that any statewise marijuana initiatives are doomed if the electorate lurches to the far right..irregardless of which party that represents...

so democrats back then were trying to ban drugs because they're
conservatives, democrats today are trying to ban drugs because 'think
of the children'... seems the rhetoric changes but not the policy

I wonder what exactly he did to decriminalize marijuana possession,
from what I could tell all he did was stop paying Noriega

i doubt very much it was liberal democrats that came up with all the "think of the children" bullshit...more likely it was the repugs..and the democraps are simply following suit out of craven political calculation...

isnt that what you say about everything, I mean what's the point in the
liberals even having a party if all they do is steal the rhetoric of the
'greater evil' and just run it into the ground... sounds to my like you
keep hitching your wagon to the wrong ass, those progressives seem to be
80 years behind the times

if the times are far on the right (as you seem to imply).. and liberalism is a faded relic of FDR.. then why even bother to discuss legalizing marijuana..let alone put it up for a statewide vote??...thats what the thread is all about...

and BTW..theres no liberal "party" either...

Don't be stupid that's the definition of insanity.

This issue is much more complicated than R/D, I really gota wonder sometimes here the inane dichotomies you guys try to throw together. Support of the drug war is bipartisan and mostly dependent per candidate on where they want to draw support from.
