Help on yields
    #1314020 - 02/17/03 12:48 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

My friend had some great first flushes. Coir casing over straw in 30 gallon trashcans. Lid is just clear plastic. Hepa filter in the room, one rated for a far bigger room.

Problems keeping the humidity up high enough has been a constant headache.
Tried ultrasonics and gave up, no amount of tweaking worked right. The coir dries out very fast. The cool mists were far too loud.

He has been hand spraying, though that is getting to be a huge hassle. Trying airstones now + hand spray if needed. Things are so dry here hand spraying 5 or 6 times a day is needed. He is going to try a brand new cheap airless paint sprayer, since he is spraying 4 to 6 bottles a day.. On the bright side they are cracker dry in 72 hours in a net bag in front of a fan. Trying 1 and 2 air stones per trash can to see how many are needed to keep things humid in this bone dry climate. If two airstones they are on opposite sides.

Problems as follows:
Cracked caps, too dry. Bubbler should help.
Green mold, probably not enough air exchange. Bubbler should help.
Drooping shrooms, No clue what the problem is? They droop and stop growing towards the light. Its like they are drunk or something.

Any thoughts on trying to sterilize trashcans after they contaminate? They only cost $7 each, and he is unsure if lysol will sterilize the green mold contamination after its washed thoroughly. Probably easier just to dump them.

Wondering if the trashcans need filter patches near the casing for co2 removal since they leake some air during colonization thru the lid seam and if using bubblers they get plenty of fresh air during fruiting.

He also had an idea for fruiting straw in a hanging net bag inside of a clear plastic bag though he does not think it would be caseable. If the humidity is kept up enough will they grow as well without a casing? Nice thing about a bag is you get far more surface area. Real pain to try to case though he thinks. Any experiances with uncased straw?

Help is much appreciated since his researcher gets free fun.

No, sorry, thats really strange....
I know that coir can look dry when the under surface is still wet....mabye its being overwatered?...prolly not......
