Parafilm splitting.

So I've realised that I'm wither being to rough on my parafilm or stretching it too tight.
I took a loot at my plates and my para has split at the gap between the top and bottom.
Any suggestions on how much para you use per dish and how many times you go around it?
I've been using a 1" x 2" strip per 3.5" dish.

you gotta evenly stretch the whole film out or it will crack.

Well I think that I have been stretching it too much, like right to the limit.
I think it just hold on that tight. Seems like if I happen to slide the bottom/top to one side it might stress it and make it crack.

using LDPE wrap, I don't find there are splitting problems.

yes but it has to be LDPE specifically to allow oxygen to permeate it.
It's common practice around here. Buy a roll of cling wrap, try to make clean cuts into 2" rolls or so pieces and use it 2-3x around. Never failed me and I've never heard of it failing anyone else.

I've heard about using it around here. Was jsut trying to be and use the proper stuff.
Its expensive though, paprafilm.
Might use a hacksaw or a box cutter on the roll to make nice pieces.

4 squares of parafilm are right for one dish. Either you're wrapping it too tight, or you bought an old roll. If it gets old, it's too dry and will crack. Get it right from Parafilm to ensure freshness, and keep it in a ziplock bag between uses.
I don't plastic wrap, even the ones that are gas permeable. It's often very hard to get off, and when doing sterile transfers, you want the film to be very easy to remove with gloved hands. RR

hacksaw or other knife, mine don't look like the cleanest cuts but hardly have problems, cept the odd time it catches on the side and splits the wrap, but you can just wrap around it or pull it off and redo.
Never used parafilm personally, when I see a cheap method that doesn't require ordering a lab specific supply I try it, makes for some failures but here an example of it saving me money.

I dissagree it's easy if you rip or cut it. Hell usually the end is somewhat loose anyway and easy to remove and you could tie a knot in the end before you work to make it extra easy.
You may have a hard time being taken seriously by other scientists if you show up with saran wrapped dishes though.

well I had to say something RR is so impressionable he may actually switch if it sounds reasonable enough. If obama visited his lab and said "Whoh WTF mofuckaaa? Is this saran wrap? That's it, this guy is no professional everybody GTFO. No grants for him, in fact I'm blacklisting him from receiving any help from any government agency whatsoever." I'd be responsible. I can't have that on my back.

I also use glad wrap on my petri dishes. I find it very easy to get off Also if you buy a big roll u can cut it into 6 2 inch rolls. It goes along way. I have not had the pleasure to try parafilm yet but one of these days I will I suppose.

I can vouch for both. I use parafilm now because I landed a great deal on a bunch...but I used glad wrap without issue for couple years. Amazing stuff both ways.
Though my parafilm is 4" wide so I have a bit of overlap. .5" x 4" strips.

I've had this problem before. What I do now is tear a 5"-6" piece from the 2" wide roll, and fold it in half lengthwise and wrap around the dish. Problem solved.
