growing from spores in dung?
    #1310888 - 02/16/03 03:00 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

would growing in dung from spores(not colonized cake pieces) be very effective in quantity of fruit bodies produced and length of time to colonize? sterilizing the dung and all would be done ofcourse

Just for you shir,

Translation:
I think they won't germinate.
I tried that once, but it didn't work.  Its a good thought that we all have had.

And to the origional poster, it could work, but highly unlikely.  Just colonize a couple of PF cakes.

Will somebody please explain this to me? How do cow patties get innoculated? How is it that spores can make mycelium grow in poo outdoors?

mycelium lives in the wild as mycelium. its spores are everywhere, too, but these only germinate in ideal situations. in the middle of a cowpat isn't usually ideal, though probably one in a kazillion will manage it okay, which is how the species managed to survive so long.

so in the wild, a patty is 'infected' by mycelium in the ground underneath it.

you may be able to use honey water. ive never tried it, but it seems as though you are looking for an idea that skips grain/flour substrates, and this may work. let a more experienced grower verify

actually my friend lets his horses lick the prints after theyve been scraped, and weve found two piles of poop with little shrooms growing from them.we started feeding them spores after i read somewhere that the spores start their journey by a cow/horse/etc. eating the spores that are dusted on the grass, thus inoculating their poop.

Umm I am pretty sure the horses stomach acid would kill the spores.

I've been told by Dr. Jack States that most mushroom spores will not survive being eaten by an animal. Mushroom ecology and hypogeous (underground) fungi are his specialties. Along those lines, the spores of truffles and their relatives cannot germinate unless they've been through an animal's digestive system

Quote from Toxicman in the mushroom hunting forum, thats why I thought stomach acid might kill spores, I honestly don't know tho

i heard that bovines(cow family? ) are one of the only animals which have no digestive fluids or maybe enzymes

could be hype but it makes sense since they have 9 stomachs and only eat grass.

Cows actualy have one stomach, it's just divided into 4 sections...and there are loads of enzymes that aid in the breakdown of food, unlike with poultry that have to eat sand and pebbles to assist in digestion....

wich is why horse poo is better right? with only one stomach they dont take out as many nutrients as cows do. as well as the horses bieng fed better (grain, alfalfa etc. that pasture cows arent normally fed). thats what ive always assumed but i could be wrong.

hmm well I have heard about chicken, not alot..but personally I would think you would prefer a non-meat eating animal

although some people use dogfood and stuff... I think that is just too weird
