The U.N., Good bad or Ugly?
    #1313043 - 02/17/03 12:10 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

What are your feelings of the U.N. as it stands? Does it resemble the League of Nations? And will it be broken up the same way?

Personally i don't like the U.N. and never have. Everytime the UN is diployed the world calls it the United States. When people talk about the persian gulf war they (in general) think that it was the US Vs. Iraq and this has always flumixed me. I realize we fund the UN the most but there are a lot of other countries involved.

Given the present problems the US is having with France, Germany and Russia. What is it's future?

I'd say at best, given the current situation, the future of the UN looks grim. The current crisis has really put the pressure on and I think many are losing faith in the power of the UN. If the US takes unilateral action against Iraq without the support of the UN then they will have become irrelevant. I think the major players will stick with the UN (France, Russia etc) but, and I hate to admit it, without the US the UN isn't gonna be worth too much. Also, from what I have read, the UN don't have the funds to take care of the humanitarian crisis that will arise after a conflict in Iraq.

Are you familiar with the league of nations? The similarities are interesting. Both involve France.

On one hand the UN is terrbily important when the US are talking about the various resolutions that Iraq have not complied with but when the UN view doesnt match the US view, suddenly the UN are irrelevant!

The main problem with the UN is that it isn't strong enough to stand up to America. By threatening economic measures america can usually force it's own way through. France already looks to be buckling (as usual), we can only hope the Germans stay strong.

i personally wouldn't mind seeing it break up. It would get the US out of problems that only affect other countries and hopefully place money that is earmarked for UN membership for domestic problems.

The UN is a governing body with no means (or no will) to enforce its rulings. No countries who are possible threats respect the UN, and many of those within are becoming fed up with its bullshit.

The UN is a good idea. But the problem is we need a balance of power. As long as someone (USA), is powerful enough to ignore them, then what they say has no merit or value.
What the US should do is disarm to the same power of other prominent nations, and collectivly fund a UN military unit which would reflect the interests of the unified nations.

NO FUCKING WAY....

That has about as much a chance as a snowball in hell. Why don't other countries move up to OUR level? It's not a moral thing, it's a limitations thing

You mean like in Iraq, with their WMD's? Or how about in N. Korea where we know they have nukes? Whenever a country tries to move up to our level, we threaten them with war.

It would get the US out of problems that only affect other countries

At the moment it can't keep the Bush *government* out of intefering in other countries.

*Bush government* - hard to call it a government when it's simply a front for oil corporations.

that's not even relavent and that wasn't even my point. Why is it always us that has to change?

I'm surprised anyone supports the UN, especially since so many are against a one government world.

****Whenever a country tries to move up to our level, we threaten them with war. ****

Korea made and agreement that if we..or should i say Klinton gives them technology to produce a nuclear power plant with the understanding that they will not produce nukes. They lied like most communist do, and i'm not really surprised.

Iraq has violated many of their surrender agreemwnts.
That is why they have been threatened with war.

As a side note Japan has threatened to destroy N. Korea if they threaten the area at all. They said that they would use nukes but it was my understanding that Japan doesn't have any nukes.
