9.9 million out of 7 billion people?...i'm not against people protesting but that's .00141% of the total population. I'm impressed that, that many people showed up but in the scheme of things it's not all that much

that would be an interesting stat....it would take a lot to get me to go to a rally either way (however i might go to the Hash-bash this year, for different reasons ofcourse)

EDIT: People that are against any instance are more likley to protest than those that are in support for it. If they made it illegal to have free speech how many pro-anti-speech people do you think would show up?

That's a good point,  but I look at it a little differently.

It doesn't really matter if 10%, 50% of the world's population turned out for massive, enormous protests around the globe; it all hinges on whose got the bombs.  What's important with these protests is awareness.  Compared to other globally coordinated demonstrations, the numbers involving the President's war drive are staggering.  It is clear that the mass-media's regurgitated diatribe is not entirely soluable with the public.  If and when the Bush administration finally tumbles into Iraq, the gap between the people and their leaders widens, becoming more apparent.  Eventually, that gap becomes unbridgeable.  That's the first ingredient in a revolution.

History in the making.

It has to start somewhere though.  Most of these protests would not occur without the internet, and relatively few people in the world are connected.  A month ago there was very few people protesting.  The word is spreading, not through traditional media, not by TV or newspaper, but by word of mouth, websites, and emails.  Slowly but surely, I hope that the world peace movement will grow.

Next time, I will bring along as many friends and family as I can.  If they witness how much fun it is, and realize how beautiful the experience can be, marching in a sea of amazing people, kids, dogs, banners, balloons, chanting for peace and love... Some of them will come back next time and invite their friends and family.

that's not a lot...i'm not saying i'm pro-war but it seems that the numbers are a lot lower than how the media is presenting it. Hell a U of Mich football game brings in 110,000 every week without advertising...

just sayin'

Dude, it's not like every person who's against the war came to the protests. But the fact that so many people did come out and protest in such record numbers should send a clear message to Bush and Blair.

i see where you're coming from but i don't see the point of the protests. I would bet that 1/2 of those at the protests were just there because their buddies were.....like i said i'm just sayin'

the ones in Iraq don't count because they probably were threatened to do so. And as for France.....well....nevermind...

Like i said, i'm impressed that 9+ million people actually organized.

Ten million is a significant number of people, considering there is no war. World leaders have gotten the message: If war starts, the protests will dramatically multiply in size, which could lead to civil war / overthrown governments. I dont think Bush is worried about that, he has army in defense position around Washington. Britain and Australia have to think long and hard before going to war without backing of the people. A swarm of millions storming government buildings = defeat.

I reckon you have to work out the percentage from the populations of those cities, not the population of the world. There were 5000 people in Wollongong Australia though those are not included in the figures, and there were more cities in America which held a protest. Some countries are not allowed to protest and many people don't have access to TVs and newspapers, etc to know what is going on and don't have the means to organise a big protest.

It's a little more complicated than that. Plus those stats can be disputed (no reference.)

Here's a different set of stats that will show a different result (this is just for fun)

30 million protesting worldwide
world population 6,214,891,000

using the population of more developed countries (1,197,329,000, see above) and 30 million protesters we raise our .00141% up to 2.505576996798708% an increase of 1777%

Still not a huge percentage but hey, not everybody wants to protest. Numbers are fun.

What the thinker thinks, the prover proves.

Just thought I'd add that not everyone who shares anti-war sentiments goes out and protests. This means that the numbers of people that consider themselves Anti war (moreover, anti Bush) are much larger than those figures.

Politicians know this and it scares the hell out of them.

I think these numbers are fantastic! The war hasn't even started and the peace movement is gaining momentum. Bush and his buddies may ignore us for now, but there will be consequences... PEACE

"Montreal - 150,000 - The largest political demonstration in Montreal history."

The most recent separation referendum sparked a protest march in Montreal that attracted 200,000 people.

I wonder if Bush even cares that people are protesting.
