My 225 mile bike trip in two days...
    #13120610 - 08/29/10 07:11 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

And just today I decided to strip down to the absolute bare essentials (back to basics), and nearly doubled my planned trip length.
I'm planning on spending at least 5 mights out there.

I also cut out the weed,
and on my final night out there,
on the sandy Indiana dunes overlooking lake Michigan,
I plan on dosing ~30mg of 2CE
and ~50mg of DMT on the comedown.

What was supposed to be a fun, laid back, drugged out trip, is now a sober, self-reflecting endurance race. An ultimate test of physical and mental... endurement (I'm making that a word).
A physical and mental cleansing.

I'm going to be eating a lot of rice,  drinking a lot of water,
cranking many miles,
and much time spent thinking about where to go after college.

Should be fun.

Right on man, good luck, and post pics when you're done. I've been thinking about doing this sort of thing for a while now.  What kind of bike are you on? Are you bringing a tent, or going with a tarp and hannock?  What foods are you bringing besides rice?  What's your gear list look like?

You sound like someone I'd love to meet. Have fun man. I just bought a bike and can't wait till I'm at this level. Any tips for a beginner?

I know it's been a while. My trip route didn't go as planned, which ended up turning out infinitively better (and a  hell of a lot harder) than I could have ever imagined. I learned so much about myself. I'd almost call it an spiritual experience.

I ended up ditching the bike paths and sticking the the roads; some dead farm roads and some others busy highways. I bought a couple maps at various gas stations and I made a new route as I rode on. I only had a general direction in mind. Everything else was left up to the moment.

I also rode a TON more miles than I had previously thought I could even physically do, even with a couple sustained injuries on my ride -- but if I just rode harder, the adrenaline killed the pain.

The second day I ended spending close to 10 hours on the saddle. This also meant that I made it home a lot sooner too. Sorry, no pictures. Maybe I'll bring one on my next trip. But when I got to my supposed second camp site at 11 am, I decided, "fuck it, I'll just keep riding". So I rode to a third camp site, but when I got there there was still plenty of daylight to kill, so I said fuck it, and kept riding. Ended up riding all the way home on the second day. I rode to a beach right near my apartment, and just collapsed in the water.

Now that I know I can ride all day, I'm going to be doing a lot of overnighters like this.
I'll have to save the big trip next week break I get, and I'm gonna make sure it's a destinationless one (so much better just going with the flow of the moment).

Next weekend I hope to ride down to the Indiana dunes. A bit late in the summer, I know, but after this one trip I have an itching to just ride.

As for my gear list: I rode on my hardtail MTB (Gary Fisher Piranha). I took the stubby tires off and put on slicks for the road. I slept in a Tom Claytor Jungle Hammock; which was strapped to my handle bars (and also kept me dry on my night out there).  I had all my food (raisins, nuts, rice and crackers) and bike tools in a Toepeak rear bag/ rack combo. My helmet, camp clothes, psychedelic drugs, and water were on my back; along with a knife, a magnesium stick and a bag of nuts.

I just walked into work not too long ago, so I'll leave it at this unless any questions come up. This is actually the first time I sat down and tried to formally reflect back on my adventures, so I know it might be a little scattered, and I left out all the juicy details, but if you're itching to know more, than go on a ride of your own.

And that brings me to...

There's a saying that goes around the bike/back packing community: "The hardest part is leaving".

As long as you are at least well informed on basic survival and you can ride your bike, than you have what it takes to do this (on your own pace and time).

But really, I would recommend you test the waters by just riding your bike with all your gear to a local camp spot (I'd avoid those "legit" campsites and stick to wilderness camping, but that's me). Through this, you'll be able to learn what you can ditch and what you would need for a longer journey. Good luck.

I've been biking since I was like 12, I think. But I've been doing it more seriously just these past few years though.

But I don't think you could do a trip like this on a bmx bike. They just aren't designed for riding long distances. Hell, they aren't even designed to sit down on. The seat is just there to rest your butt on in-between jumps and what have you. Defiantly get a road style bike and just keep riding until you feel confident enough to do longer trips. You'll know when you're ready once you stop questioning your abilities to ride the long distances.

Nice to hear about your trip!

I just recently got into biking and would love to try something like this, although maybe not quite as much distance.

Ive got an 86 BCAmerica roadbike, not anything worth bragging about, but she gets the job done. Ive been slowly increasing my ride distances
