Morel Cultivation?

Is it possible to grow morel mushrooms indoors? I have heard that they require frequent freezing / thawing during the springtime, but that is about the extent of info I have gathered. Anyone have any information on this? Do they require a symbiotic relationship with anything? Just curious anyway, I would love an out of season source for this mushroom

Psycoslut, are those fresh or dried morels? My grocery store sells dried morels but they are from wild harvested mushrooms. If your grocery store sells fresh ones, then that would prove they are cultivated. Morel mountain, the only place I have heard of growing morels indoors, is out of business.

I believe this mushroom is very hard to cultivate. If that wasn't the case, there would be plenty of mushrooms farms cultivating them. But that doesn't mean we can't try

You can get as much as 40 dollars a pound. As far as I have heard they have been and are cultivated indoors. However, no one has really got a method down that is truly large scale and truly reliable in comparison to other indoor cultivated species. This could very easily keep prices up because the supply of fresh indoor cultivated morels is still very low.

deadnofmean, it is my understanding that the basic method used in that guide [and most others] is verry much hit and miss, even assuming ideal conditions. i intend to try similar methosd once i get my root cellar built (i think it would offer a desent and cheap way to maintain incubation temps for temperate species during a hot summer, and they provide thier own airflow due to convection so i think contams will be minimal). i would be verry interested hearing from anyone who has tried to grow them or succeeded and is willing to share accounts.

Advice from this site:
"Remember, whenever you want to try eating a mushroom you're not familiar with, check it in at least two field guides. If they say it's edible, try just a nibble, wait 24 hours, and if there are no ill effects then consume larger amounts."

I think the advice is not that good. What is says basically is that if you nibble on a mushroom, and nothing happen in 24 hours, they are good to eat.

the problem with such practice [usualy refered to as the "universal edibility test"] is that with many toxins once you've consumed enough to notice any adverse effects the damage has been done. toxins such as mmh and amatoxins is fall into this catagory, kinda "hit and run". for this reason, i too am leary or experimentation when it comes to mushrooms. the [complete] test does work rather well with most plants, as most plant toxins will let you know something's wrong at much lower doses than those that could kill you.

I did some research on this last year. Terry Farms changed their name to Ag-Tech Systems, L.L.C. on 8/24/99. They soon went out of business after the name change. The building that housed their morel growing operation is still for sale in Auburn, Alabama. The trail goes cold after that and there is no indication that anyone is currently using the NeoGen patent for commercial purposes. NeoGen never replied to my emails regarding morel cultivation.
Mr_Mushrooms: I'd love to hear the morel competition story and what you tried and how close you got in your efforts. Details man!
