100% verm. casing
    #1310030 - 02/15/03 01:34 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I read the "casing for dumies" guide and was thinking of making like 2 cakes into a casing. Has anyone used a 100% verm mix before? I have 8 cakes and wanted to see for my self the difference in the flushes and growing methods..

also can i have my cakes and my casing in the same teterrium?

If I were you, I'd go with a 50/50 (verm/peat) casing mix. It really isn't too difficult. I know some are convinced 50/50+ is the way to go (and it probably is) but the fact remains that 50/50 worked fine for me. I used Scott's Sphagnum Peat Moss by the way. If you have time and want to, you can pretty easily find crushed oyster shells (think PetSmart in the bird section) which provide structure and help to "sweeten" your mix. Also, you could just use Coco Coir (forest bed, bed-a-beast) which doesn't need a pH adjustment.

I would say no, you shouldn't put your cakes and casings in the same terrarium. Casings require a humidity that is a bit lower. That said, I believe the casing would still fruit, the environment would just be less than optimal, and the yield might suffer.

You will love casings. I made a 2-cake casing (2 out of 7 cakes). I had excellent first flushes for my cakes (5-6 grams dry), but it was nothing compared to my casing. I cased the rest of my cakes, and they are just now pinning. Needless to say, I can't wait.

I would advise you to case all your cakes purely on principal . . . it would be a waste not to do so. However if you are really interested in comparing the yields, you could do what I've done and just case the rest of your cakes after your first flush.

I hope I helped you out a bit, and whatever you decide, good luck!!

thanks man for the info.. Now on this mix.. Is it safe to use a bottom layer for the casing. I read on the FAQ that there is alot of discusion on if there should be a bottom layer or not. What are some of u peeps doing and thoughts.

Case all your cakes, and 100% verm works very well. Just make sure its evenly hydrated and releases only a few drops of water when you firmly squeeze a handful of verm. Put an inch or two (3 - 5cm) below crumbled cakes and a .5 (1 cm)inch or so above. Give them some light and fresh air, and you'll be very pleased.

It isn't nearly as good as coco coir/vermiculite but is is good none the less. The difficult thing about it is that it is hard to tell if it is properly hydrated.

Also many people suggest to make the bottom layer straight verm instead of a mix.

Ok so I have like 2 cakes that might be 100% colonized like in 2 days. I think i am going to make a little casing with this..

Should i setrilize my mix in the micro before hand? About 5 mins in the microwave?

can i have my casing in the same incubator as my other jar until the casing fully colonizes and then i would move it to its own terrarium..

ps. When U are doing a casing there is no need for perlite on the bottom since the casing from what I have heard supplies most of its own humidity right?

Hey, use one terrarium, but make all your cakes into casings....
Try the 50/50, vermiculite, and jiffy mix, compare the results and see which you like best!!
My first project was cakes...they wouldn't pin so after 2 weeks, i cased in vermiculite and a week later had lots of tiny EQ shrooms.  But casing is the way to go!
