Pholiota? Different Gymnopilus species?

Habitat huge cluster at the foot of a dead tree
Gills pores/gills: gills color: yellow attachment: decurrent
Stem length: 3” diameter: 3/4” color: yellow at the top, rusty brown below texture: ragged and lumpy, has a large veil ring hollow/solid: unsure, too many slugs
Cap diameter: 1-2” color: mostly yellow but covered in shades of rusty brown like the stem texture: kind of ragged like the stem shape: generally round but misshapen convex/concave: convex
Spore print waiting but it looks yellowish brown so far
Bruising gills and stem turn rusty brown when cut/handled

I'm having trouble with the key because the spore color I'm seeing so far is more yellow-brown than anything but I only have a very light print right now. If I go with brown it comes up as Pholiota but it doesn't look like the Pholiota pictures. My other guess would be a different Gymnopilus species than the one I saw the other day.

In the wake of the storm, Armillaria includes only white-spored, wood-rotting mushrooms with gills that are attached to the stem or run down it; most species are parasitic, and many form visible black rhizomorphs in the wood.
The spores are definitely not white.

sorry, didn't read the spore print colour. In that case you are probably right about Pholiota

The spore print color is hard to describe and my camera is terrible at accurately showing colors. It's not brown or yellow. It's kind of yellow-orange-brown. It isn't vibrantly orange like Gymnopilus. It's not brown like Pholiota are described as having.
They looked a lot like these but a much denser cluster. Probably not those, though, because of the print color.
Any ideas?

I THOUGHT somebody got to that cluster before me! Its spectabilis. I can only say that for sure because I know the exact specimen she found. Sve, if you still have them look for green bruising. its evident on most of them.

They look like Gymnopilus spectabilis. Mushrooms demystified uses the word "decurrent" as well. Clusters and growing on dead tree foot. I feel like an expert would have easily placed this so. I was just going through my books using the keys. Just trying to learn. Thanks for the pictures.

It's interesting that this species is described as having a bright orange print. The other Gymnopilis I found had a much more orange print and those are apparently liquiritiae, which is supposed to have a rusty brown print.
Is it common for the print color to change as the mushroom develops? I believe I read in Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushroom that pink oysters have a spore color that changes over time. I'm curious to know if that's typical for most mushrooms.

Hmmmm. The prints that I got WERE bright orange. It might be your printing medium. I print on clear plastic cards so Im able to see exactly what the color looks like ( plus it comes out great for making microscope ready prints). Ill show you the tek someday.
