What up shroomers? For all you workout buffs what protein shake do you all buy and use? I use muscle milk lite its pretty awesome low calories and all the goods too. I have started replacing my breakfast with the shake and have noticed good results. Any other supplements to recommend when you go to the gym? I use N.O. Xplode too.

American Whey-vanilla is the best tasting protein i've ever tried, and i've tried a lot of different brands, cant beat the price either.
I'm currently taking Serious Mass by Optimum Nutrition, it works wonders for packing on sheer size and strength when bodybuilding. My strength is through the roof and my arms are getting huge, as well as cut. Been developing new veins all around my bi/tri's even though its a gainer. Yeah it puts a little body fat over your midsection, but when bulking, abs are the last thing you need to worry about(to me anyway). $2.00 dollars/serving for 1250 calories,50g protein, 250g carbs, and chock full of vitamins its a good deal if you do the math.
I got some Jack3d about 2 months ago and just been taking single scoops here and there. When I first got it and immediatly took 3 scoops it was the best preworkout supp experience i've taken by far, way more noticeable pump/mental stimulation than N.O Xplode, but it was so intense at 3 scoops it was to the point of feeling seriously cracked out(giant lifting drive, pacing, etc.).

I'd say focus on food first and if you aren't getting the bare minimum feel free to supplement, but most fitness freaks probably OD on the protein IMO.
Pre-workout supplements are trash imo as well unless you are JUST getting into the gym and need some kind of incentive. Otherwise I don't see it as anything useful.
I think whey protein is more useful to vegetarians than weight lifters.

Do protein supplements work -i.e. help facilitate additional muscle growth?
I've been told that I need to ingest a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight but, although my diet is *mostly* balanced, I'm pretty sure I don't ingest 200 grams of protein per day.
Are protein supplements only of true interest to the full-time bodybuilder/athlete?? Or good for muscle growth in beginners too?

They do in fact facilitate muscle growth. Its been proven that protein is essential for individuals to repair their muscle fibers once it has been torn at the gym for example. Most people do not get the protein they need to do this from their diet alone. However, yeah I would say they are targeted towards people that workout.

Muscle Milk isn't low calorie, comparatively speaking. It tastes FUCKING AMAZING but in the long run you'll kick yourself in the ass. Gaspari Nutrition Myofusion is the best protein that's out there right now. Please do yourself a favor and start buying this.
To be honest too, I've done all the different diets out there, all the supplements and now most of the drugs too. Take it from me, don't buy into the supplement hype. Yes, all the claims are basically true in context but in real life it does virtually nothing. Yes, x product will increase protein synthesis, increase lipolysis, etc... but it's on such a small scale that it's not worth the cash. If you need something to get you in the gym then get some cheap pre workout supplement or just some caffeine. I'm a pump junky and get supplements at cost (sponsored athlete) so I still use it. But if I didn't get hooked up it'd be just caffeine and ephedrine, vitamins and general health products. MAYBE creatine monohydrate too, because you do get a good bang for your buck.
As far as protein is concerned I've bounced around on this one too. I juice so please take that into consideration too. But I think that a gram per pound is pretty good whether you're cutting or bulking. If you can, try for at least 100-150g of protein from whole foods and then a protein shake post workout. I used to live off protein shakes and while that did help me to bulk, you need to appreciate the thermic affect of whole foods. You expend energy breaking down whole foods but with protein shakes you don't need to do much of anything. I think if you have a bit of fat you should limit the protein shakes because it'll make fat loss difficult. I'm pretty in tune with my body and I seem to get harder, fuller and leaner when eating whole foods. I still love protein shakes and get half my calories from them, but I'm shifting over to more whole foods. That's just me. See what works for you.
If you buy protein at the right price and decide to make home made meal replacements it can be an awesome and cost effective way to manage your food budget. I regularly eat steak and other awesome foods because I pinch pennies by doing meal replacement shakes and eating dry cereals with protein and water once or twice a day, everyday. Doesn't sound like much but if you're really looking to get in shape and eat tasty nutritious meals then it's worth evaluating.

Yeah I know regular muscle milk has a lot this is a lite version but still it does have calories which I factor in to my daily intake or try to anyway cause I'm just getting to the point where I start to count them. Anyway a protein shake as a meal replacement is a good way to cut out some bad calories during the day with something that does not get stored as fat.

I'm just lifting dumbells at home at the moment. Do you think it's likely I'd see better muscle growth than not by ramping up my protein intake? Or it's only really of massive benefit when you're doing a full gym program? I'm more interested in bulking than cutting, though I do have some excess fat I need to get rid of, so don't really want to overload on the protein!
I don't know if I could use protein supplements as a meal replacement though! I think I like my food too much...!
Cheers guys

I put a scoop of Whey protein mix in a blender with some assorted fruits and a banana daily. Tastes pretty damn healthy. They say Whey is the best thing you can do for you muscles, besides rest...I think.

THIS NEEDS TO BE TAKEN INTO SERIOUS CONSIDERATION
1 gram per pound has been shown to be overkill for any average athlete, weight lifters hardly needing a significant amount more than others. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.
Of course if you are juicing it's a whole different ball game

I don't buy Muscle Milk anymore because it's too fucking addicting. I get supplements are cost but even then I can polish off a tub way too quickly. I seriously love Muscle Milk more than real food. So fucking delish
On that note, time to make a protein shake. Om nom nom nom nom.

I use milk protein concentrate, and not very often these days tbh, but then, my training has been sporadic at best lately, so I don't see the need. I need to get my arse back in gear.

I used O.N. Whey for years. Recently I switched to Jarrow Whey. It's all natural, no artificial sugar and it is far less processed.
