Bulk Tek

Hey, this was inspired by the many bulk procedures that my friend PJ has read. He thinks that he is going to use horse poo and straw. What ratio of horse manure:straw should he use??? To pasteurize it, he's just going to put it in a pillow case and throw that into a PC with no lid. What temperature should he pasteurize it at and for how long? Can he just use distilled H2O? After that, he plans to use a PF jar or a QUART jar to inoculate. Thanks for all your help guys! daba

It doesn't matter. 50/50 is a good bet Quote:

1 hour at 170 degrees F. Sure you can use distilled water Quote:

PF quart jar? If you are using a PF cake, try grating it with a cheese grater.
Have fun, good luck.

My dog eyeballs it basicly it's not a big deal he says. He said he always puts way more straw than dung. He also only uses cow crap but thats just my dog i guess. My dog is always mixing up way to much and has alot of waste so he went out back and dug a good size hole. He now tosses the left overs n this hole along with his spent casings. My dogs hoping that he will go back there this spring and see something extra. I hope I can catch that bastard b4 he cocks his leg on them

1. together is fine n a pillow case. 2 the sink or bathtub work if it's warm outside hang it n a tree 3 not if it has been dried and not fresh

1. mix after they are pasturized
2. hang the straw in pillow case above something that can catch water, sink maybe. for poo, let it cool in the oven if u do it that way, if not hang it above the sink too.
3. probably no smell if this isn't urea soaked fresh stuff

Is there a reason 4 this or just a preferance? My dog has never had a problem doing them together

no particular reason other than possibly pasturizing via 2 routes (stovetop for straw, oven for poo)

i dunno what a good ratio is, just whatever looks good. avoid having straw on the top layer though cause it will mold very easy. go for wheatstraw if you can. its a lighter color as opposed to hay. right now i'm trying a dung/timothy hay casing which is colonizing pretty well, i doubt i'll have contam problems due to using hay. umm also for innoculating the dung/straw, you might want to try tossing a cake or 2 in a blender and turning it to small particles. just sprinkle that all over and there will be lots of points of innoculation. i think mushroom compost is spent compost from growing mush, prolly not worth using.

1. Wheat straw is straw -- it just comes from wheat 2. Timothy Cob Hay is easier to find if you don't have access to a rural area or places that sell wheat straw. A friend of my meerkat had good success with Timothy Cob Hay and manure, but more people seem just to go for straight wheat straw. Try and cut it up into one to three inch pieces with gardening shears or some other tool you don't really care about (it will dull the shit out of the shears).
My meerkat's cousin says the straw/poo mixture should give up a little water when squeezed firmly -- he advises a little drier than casing moisture content if you are going to case -- probably casing moisture content if you are just going to fruit off of the hay directly.
