Liquid vs. Dried Malt extract

So, on my usual stroll through the health-food store, on the hunt for something useful to incorporate into my experiments i noticed that they carried two types of malt extract.
One is a light tan powder, reminiscent of west coast heroin. I wish. The other is a thick syrup like concoction deep brown in color. Both only have Sprouted Barley Malt as the only listed ingredient. Same price for the same amount.
Intrigued, i made a purchase, and went home to try some new recipes for Liquid cultures. I always mess around way too much, and got anywhere from 50+ jars with different constituents growing. My goal is, through experimentation, to come to an understanding of which growing medium mycelium PREFERS. So far it grew in everything, but i want to know what's BEST!
The best recipe i found thus far follows:
- 500ml Water
- 7g Dextrose
- 7g Dried Barley Malt extract powder
i thought i substitute the 7g's of dried powder for 7g's of the liquid malt extract, and see if we get similar results.
let me tell you, as soon as i mixed it up i noticed we are going to have complications. The powdered malt extract creates a clear liquid, with barley any sediment. The liquid malt extract however made the water opaque, i could not see through it anymore.
I filtered it twice through coffee filters, and then PC'ed for 45 minutes. it came out almost clear, with most sediment sitting on the bottom. One shake, and the water was opaque again.
Nonetheless, i inoculated it with liquid culture made from 5g's Clear Corn Syrup and 400ml water, a foolproof recipe, even though growth appears a bit slower in this medium. Thus far it has been hard to observe any growth, due to about a 1/4 of an inch layer of sediment on the bottom.
Therefore, i conclude, dried malt extract is superior to liquid malt extract. Get the powdered stuff whenever you can!
And that is all i wanted to share. Comments are welcome

This is my favorite recipe 20g Dry Malt Extract, or 30g (liquid)Malt Extract @1000ml Water, for LC. 20g Dry Malt Extract, or 30g (liquid)Malt Extract and 25g Agar @1000ml Water for petri dishes. No Dextrose, but you can add 2-3g Dry Yeast @1000ml for additional nutrients.

Dry extract is also more concentrated than liquid. The guy working at the brewery told me that himself.

Are you referring to the 3oz or 20oz package? The 3oz package is a horrible ripoff with their shipping options. The 20oz package is a decent deal I guess and comes out to $2.076 / oz with shipping. So far I've found 25g (.88oz) packets of Telephone brand agar agar powder for around $1.70 at a small asian grocery store. That place is a 35 minute drive from my house though so after gas it's not that great of a deal unless I go back and buy everything they have. If any of the smaller packages on Amazon were eligible for free shipping this would be a non-issue.

Really? I bought six or 8 packs of that Telephone stuff last time I was over on that side of town, it's lasted me a year. Also, old thread. But the message is current: agar and malt and related supplies are quite cheap.

Damn! I did not see how old the thread is! But yeah. I buy a lot at a time. Save some money but I am going to check out some more local spots to see if I can get the cost down a bit.

Thank you for taking the time and sharing. It helps me and I'm sure others. Isn't 5 grams of corn syrup 1 and 1/4 tsp? I weighed and measured. I thought it might be easier for some to know. Thanks again. Peace be with you.
