Judge makes cannabis danger documentary
A departing Taranaki judge is so concerned about the impact cannabis has on youth offenders he has made a documentary showing the dangers it poses to young brains.
Youth Court Judge Rob Murfitt said he had seen the effect cannabis had on young brains while working in the courts and with Taranaki's mental health ward and wanted to do something to stop it.
The drug was "rampant" in Taranaki and most chronic offenders were users, he told the Taranaki Daily News.
The 47 minute film aims is named Hiding Behind the Green Screen and cost about $35,000 to make. It is to premiere in New Plymouth next week
It will be available free to courts, mental health services, police, schools and CYF within Taranaki.
Judge Murfitt is being transferred to Christchurch

47 minutes of anti-marijuana propaganda - $35,000.00
The cost of living for a year in New Zealand - $25,000.00
A Flock of Seagulls Greatest hits - $4.00
Dime bag of pot - $10.00
Realizing you just wasted $35,000.00 on a 47 minute danger movie about a plant - Priceless.

A judge should know better. Guess what, every serial killer alive is believed to have consumed water within the 48 hours prior to a killing. Ban water!! How many have to drown???

It sounds fair enough. Marijuana does have effect on the developing brain I thought? i.e Under 18 youth offenders.

Is that judge really an expert on the brain. most chronic offenders are users... The only thing offensive is that sort of intolerance. If the level of intolerance against choice raises, more people are pulled into the industries based around corrections, mental health, and medical, creating a bubble of ever increasing people needing help and more dependence upon the social structure. These "authorities" actually belong in prison for their actions. It's not ok to maintain a petro chemical based economy with no direct competition allowed.

Christchurch is one of New Zealand's main cities...
This guy is a joke, leave this to the experts in that field, you're a fucking judge for fuck's sake, not a doctor or a youth psychiatrist!

I wonder how legal it is for a judge to pass this kind of documentary, especially to other courts and judges.

Marijuana is not a safe drug especially for developing brains. I do agree it has medical applications with regulated doses and supervision.

There's contradictory studies about this.

I get the feeling all across the board that the generation of prohibitonists are dying/retiring and they are determined to ensure a legacy of prohibition even stricter than what they were able to enact.
Christchurch struck me as a funny city name too, but I guess here in the USA we have the city of angels, saint peter city (san pedro), etc. I figured it was a place name just from context.
That guy looks like he keeps a fresh bottle of bourbon in his chambers at all times. I'd probably be loaded all day if I was such an uptight asshole too

I love it when people say that feeling naturally happy is better than drugs yet they speak through a perma scowl. This guy kind of has a Nixon complexion going for him. How funny would it be if he died of an alcohol OD.

It'll be interesting to see the applications this video is used for and how accepted and encouraged it's use is once it comes out...

Strong quake strikes near Christchurch, New Zealand
(CNN) -- A powerful earthquake that struck New Zealand on Saturday caused "a lot of damage," though there are no reports of serious injuries or major damage, an emergency official said.
"It was like a freight train running through the house," said Chris Monroe, operations manager for the New Zealand Fire Service.
The quake had a magnitude of 7.0, down from an initial assessment of 7.4, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It struck about 35 miles from Christchurch, a city of about 386,000 people.
An aftershock with a magnitude of 5.7 struck not far from the epicenter about 20 minutes later, the survey said.
Power was out to much of Christchurch "because of extensive damage there," Radio New Zealand reported. One person said the quake "turned his house upside down, with crockery breaking," the station reported, citing Orion, a power company. Sewer lines and water pipes have ruptured, a company spokesman told the station.
"Structural damage to houses and broken glass have been reported throughout Christchurch," the station said.
A man who was at the international airport in Christchurch described the scene.
"The entire terminal started shaking," he said. "I knew it was an earthquake. There was not much you could do at that point."
Authorities evacuated the airport, he said, adding that he saw minor damage.
"We've just had a terrible earthquake," said Paula May, a Christchurch resident. "We have no power. Lots of stuff in the house is all over the floor. All the power is down, so I can't see anything. There's no power in the town."
She said that in her house, "we've got everything down in the rooms," and that although it appears there are buildings down in the region, such as old stone masonry-type structures, "everyone I know seems to be OK."
Tim Dower, a New Zealand journalist, said it's fortunate the earthquake struck in darkness and not daytime, when people would have been out and about.
"When one of this magnitude comes along, people certainly feel it, particularly when it's shallow," he said.
There have been reports, he said, of facades and buildings collapsing, cars damaged and flooding in homes.
"We don't have any reports of significant injuries at this stage."
A person who answered the phone at the George hotel in Christchurch said that "we are cleaning up at the present moment" but wouldn't disclose any more detail.
Reinier Eulink, general manager of the Holiday Inn in Christchurch, said there's damage around the hotel corridors and "big cracks in the walls."
"It was a big big long jolt, and the building moved a lot," he said. The 13-floor building, with about 150 rooms, was about 40 percent occupied, and he estimated that 80 or more people were staying at the hotel at the time.
Power was knocked out, but emergency power came on. People were milling around in the hotel lobby, trying to get warm during the chilly Southern Hemisphere winter.
"My room is totally upside down," Eulink said.
A Christchurch Hospital shift manager said there are injuries and damage from the quake.
"We are in emergency planning at the moment," he said.
The quake was 7.5 miles deep. It struck at 4:35 a.m. Saturday (12:35 p.m. ET Friday), the survey reported.
The quake is not likely to generate a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

How is this even remotely connected to the cannabis propaganda documentary? Please stay on topic.
(Awesome that there was no major damage or injuries)

"Judge Murfitt is being transferred to Christchurch"
It seemed more like a bit of karma than a coincidence that this guy should be welcomed to town with a major earthquake
