Habitat: In open lawn, within 15 feet of tall oak tree
Gills: yellow, webbing in gills? not free? (not sure of correct term)
Stem: Short, firm, dark brown and small area of white
Cap: Dark brown, flat, not round, very irregular shape, stems often not in the middle
Spore print: will have to learn what the heck that means Bruising : that also
Thanks for your patience, I'm a beginner and thanks for any help.
With the moist weather this summer, puff balls and cauliflower mushrooms have been growing in abundance in my yard. I recently found a new patch of mushrooms that I am having trouble identifying. I cannot find any pictures or descriptions to give me enough confidence to eat them. So, I came here hoping for some help. I will browse through the site to see if I can find the answer but if anyone can give me some input that would be much appreciated. The mushroom in question grows in exposed lumps of dirt in my lawn under an oak tree. I have also found them along the north edge of my house in the lawn where there is little sunlight. It only grows a few inches high, has a 1" - 4" relatively flat and misshapen dark brown cap, bold primary yellow gills and a white stem. The gills are not very prominent and almost look like a cross between gills and spores. I think it may be a type of edible bolete, but it looks suspiciously like the deadly Galerina. I'm new at mushroom hunting but am not foolish, I spent a lot of time making sure the mushrooms that I have eaten from my yard were ok to eat. There are a few other kinds of mushrooms that I haven't identified yet growing in my yard also but I will leave that for another post, one at a time. Thanks, Ryan

For sure a bolete. Make sure someone like german identifies it for you before you even consider eating it.

I just picked and bagged 3 more types of mushrooms that I may need help identifying after this one. So far I've only been able to identify edible puff balls (very tasty, I have a gigantic tupperware container full of them already sliced up) and cauliflower mushroom which I think is the type nicknamed "hen of the woods" or "Maitake" and are the best tasting mushrooms I've picked, I hope they keep growing. Exquisite flavor and texture after simmered in salt water.

Thanks, I believe you are correct. I have done some more research on this shroom and it seems that it is edible (I also realized there is an ash tree next to the oak I was speaking of) I read that there is a poisonous look-alike, but I can't find any definite information on that. How safe is it to eat? obviously I'm not going to just scarf them down after the first person says "go for it" but I'd like to try them if I can confirm that they are edible.

Can anyone confirm that these are Gyrodon merulioides, edible and are not a poisonous look-alike? I would like to get as many confirmations as I can before I make them a side dish

Those are ash tree boletes, they are edible, they aren't very tasty.

they are edible, but not tasty as falcon said...reminiscent of old shoe leather with a dash of dirt and rotten nuts

Well if that's how tasty he said they'd be and they're not even THAT tasty, then I can see them being quite disagreeable to most pallets.

Thanks for all the input, That's too bad that they aren't tasty, I appreciate the ID though. I'll probably try to eat a little anyway just for the hell of it and so I know first hand just how nasty they taste.
