Morels Poisonous?
    #1307315 - 02/14/03 04:50 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Is this really true? I have been eating them for years and now I read in another post that they are poisonous? What are the dangers of eating them on a regular basis or without being cooked? Damn, my favorite mushroom and now im afraid of it... I can find pounds upon pounds of these things come late april and may (weather forgiving), and I was looking forward to extra hunting this year too.

Thank god I always cooked em....

I'm guessing you read one of my posts and have misinterpreted it a little.

True morels (Morchella) are all excellent edibles, as long as they are well cooked.

There are many reports of poisoning in people who have eaten raw or undercooked morels. The symptoms are typically acute indigestion (stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).

There have also been some reports of poisoning occurring in people who ingest alcohol with morels, especially Morchella elata, the Black Morel. For this reason it is recommended that you moderate alcohol intake when eating morels.

The dangerous mushrooms are the False Morels (primarily Gyromitra, Verpa, and Helvella). Many False Morels contain substances which break down into methylhydrazine when cooked. Methylhydrazine is a potentially lethal poison. Also, many of the False Morels are known to contain carcinogenic substances which are not removed by cooking. For these reasons, False Morels should not be eaten.

Hopefully that clears things up for you.

Happy mushrooming!

Yes, thank you very much ToxicMan. I really have not seen too many of the false morels around my parts except for about 3 years ago a friend of mine spotted some absolutely HUGE morels. Upon closer examination they were not true morels. Those are something I know to stay away from.

I didnt think they were actually deadly poisonous or anything as I would surely be long gone by now, I just wanted to know the possible side effects of their toxicity. Plus, if they were really bad I dont think EVERYBODY and their brother would be hunting them around here.

I just had never heard that before and it is very interesting to know this. I dont think I have ever become sick from eating them, but maybe this spring I will be a little more careful on how well I cook them.

Once again, thank you. That was exactly the information I was looking for. Plus now when I see people out looking for them I will tell them they are toxic and hopefully scare them out of my hunting grounds. More for me !

EDIT:  Here is the thread that got me confused, this part especially:

Quote:

Make sure that the mushrooms are thoroughly cooked (that includes the true morels - these guys are all poisonous raw or undercooked).

Yeah, interesting really. I didn't really know for a fact that even true morels should be cooked before injesting.

Man, once again, I really hope I can find some this year...

i've never experienced the explosive diarrhea from it, but a great many edible species can cause stomach upset if eaten raw. i was not aware of problems from consuming alcohol with morchellas.

BTW, i agree false morels are not to be messed with, MonomethylHydrazine is nasty shit, just check out the MSDS on it.

The following is from:
http://www.brushwolf.us/northstate/advisories.htm#TopBlkMorel

Northstate Mycological Club - Advisories - Black Morel - Morchella elata

During thin layer chromatography (TLC) tests of morels, about 6% of the
black morels studied were found to have small but significant amounts of
amatoxins. These morels were separated from the rest and a thorough study
was made of their morphological characteristics.
It was discovered that although the amatoxin containing specimens were
macroscopically indistinguishable from the black morel, Morchella elata,
there were minor but consistent microscopic differences and the new species,
Morchella pseudophalloides was named.

Although no deaths have yet to be attributed to this new species,
Dr. Mortiferens stresses that a large meal of M. pseudophalloides is
potentially deadly, and that smaller quantities consumed over a period of
time could cause severe liver damage. "Our advice is that no black morels
be eaten--it is just too dangerous."

Research on Black Morels

elphinstone, that's an interesting post. It's not surprising that you were taken in by it, and I suspect that the people who run the site you linked to were taken in by it as well.

That post is actually an old April Fool's joke from 1987. I was glad to see that somebody (thanks, Mykoweb!) kept the reference so that it could be linked to and everybody saved the worry from it. Note in particular that Mykoweb kept the last paragraph which gives away the joke.

I would also like to comment on the warning farther down the page, about Tricholoma flavovirens. Knowing that I am an avid eater of this species, the warning was passed to me fairly quickly. However, I have been subsequently told that a review of the research has resulted in the conclusion that the research was flawed and there is little to fear. It has still been suggested that I eat them moderately, but she says that about every species.

It is interesting to note that a number of edible mushrooms actually do contain trace amounts of amatoxins, but there is no evidence that they cause any harm at all. Boletus edulis (King Boletus, cepe, porcini, steinpilz, etc) and Cantharellus cibarius (the Chanterelle) both fall into this category (Mushrooms: Poisons and Panaceas by Denis R. Benjamin, p.147). Dr. Benjamin (he is a medical doctor) states that these species are "perfectly safe to eat" - the levels of amatoxins are harmless (I have eaten both more times than I care to try to guess).

Please do keep on the lookout for similar articles - some of them actually are legitimate.

Happy mushrooming!

I'm afraid i was taken. i'm even more glad to heat that it was fake [if not a verry funny joke].
i did think it odd that the bibliography on the page cited the study as being from an unknown source.

Yes, ToxicMan, I did think it was legit.

Casting a wide Google net for +mushrooms +tlc +amatoxins,
the Northstate site came up but not MykoWeb.

I like the last part:

"So, fellow fungophiles, this year you should collect morels
as usual, but you must not eat them. Deliver them to me and
I will see that they are properly cared for. Please, it's for
science!"

Man, that wasn't funny at all. I have several quarts of dried black morels in my cupboard.
