I'm stumped
    #13099754 - 08/25/10 11:38 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Alright so I would have eventually figured this out on my own but my wife is yelling at me to "stop reading the damn mushroom SHIT!" So i have to just ask. ---

I have a couple shotgun FCs with BRF cakes that were dunked and rolled. They are sitting atop foil on moist perlite. The temp in the room is around 70. There are at least 4 FAEs daily, coupled with a light misting. There are also CFL lights above each FC running at 12hrs on 12 hrs off.

My problem is that the cakes seem to be getting very dry despite my efforts to keep them in a moist environment. When the first cakes were placed in the FC a few pinned well and I got some decent mushies, but since then they have all had little to no pins and those that pin grow very slow.

At first, the CFLs were directly on the lid of the FC, but i have since Macgyvered some stands to keep them about three inches above the lid. I thought that this could help to reduce the drying.

The only other thing that I can think of is that my perlite isnt wet enough and not creating enough humidity. I stuck my finger down through the perlite and it felt fairly wet, but am considering re-wetting it all. Before I do all that work I will wait to see what you guys think. Thanks

i lost track of where i was reading.

you said you already got a flush?

re-dunk between every single flush to rehydrate your cakes.

tell your wife to shutup and go make you a sandwich

wet your perlite in a strainer or the sorts until its as damp as it can be. fill your chamber with 4 inches of it. no standing water.

A good way I've found to see if perlite is moist enough.

When I put my hand down in the perlite and pull it out, If my hand is not covered in perlite pieces, it needs more water.

At this point, I just remove all cakes/casings and whatnot, and pour a little water in at a time and mix it all up. Not much, just a little at a time, you don't want standing water in it.

standing water is impossible. you should have holes in ALL SIX SIDES

meh, missed where he said shotgun.

just spewing generic perlite advice. if he has holes in all six sides then yup, no standing water. like i said.

well he should be using a sgfc if hes using perlite. otherwise he'll need an air pump for a pmp, then i'd still use geolite

you could always just throw perlite in any old tub with holes in it though

or no holes at all and just fan 10 times a day.

i hear what your sayin though.

OP: perhaps fill some nylon stockings up with perlite and soak them, then hang a couple from the edge of your tub. more wet surface contacting air = higher RH

Patience is a virtue in this hobby. A lot of times things I think will take 7 days ends up taking 2 weeks or longer. There's so many variables that can affect speed and output. I haven't done cakes in years - but way back I had a similar situation w cakes/perlite in a styrofoam cooler with a plexigalss top. I only had one or two little bumps on the cakes and they just wouldn't pin. I got fruistrated and put the cooler in the corner near a window and abandonned ship. I came back a week or so later to clean up and dropped a load in my pants. Each cake had a few huge short fat bloated mushrooms that should have been picked a few days ago. There was no FAE or misting that whole week. Maybe your phucking with it too much. I'm by no means recomending no FAE. With cakes the humidity should be high - maybe you're dropping the humidity too much when fanning and it's not recovering? Definitely keep the humidity up. The temp in the room is 70ish - what's the temp inside the fruiting chamber - maybe theres a  differential there. Maybe a air wand (fish tank bubbler) buried in the perlite might help.
On a funny note I ate 3 or 4 of those mushrooms wet. I had no idead on how much to eat wet or dry back then and no scale anyways. Looking back they were probably about 30 wet grams each. I planned on going out with 2 friends to some bars and ended up laying in bed for four hour watching the walls cave in around me - LOL!!!!!

thats an amazing idea and i bet it could be used in monotubs to supplement humidity and remove all the polyfil for more FAE

ok so i checked the perlite more thoroughly and realized it was too dry. I added more perlite and got it all nice and wet. I think that this may have been my prob, I added a lot of water and it was all retained besides i little dripping.
