The NYPD searched my backpack on my way into the subway yesterday.
    #13099187 - 08/25/10 09:28 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I left work early, around 6 PM, and headed to the subway. I entered at the very same entrance I always use.  There were about 15 other people walking down the long staircase at the same time as me.  I had my headphones in. From the top of the stairs I saw three policemen around a table. I had heard about these random bag checks for about 9 years, since 9/11, but  had never actually seen one.

One of the policemen looked up and right at me. I was wearing cartoonishly colorful clothes, with a slightly scruffy beard, and a white hoodie, bopping my head to the musical stylings of The National and looking like anything but a suspected terrorist. That policeman then spoke into the ear of the one next to him, who moved to the bottom of the stairs. I knew it was going to happen, and when I got to the bottom of the stairs and made for the subway turnstile, that policeman put his finger up in front of my face, looked me in the eye, and beckoned me over to the table.

I took one headphone out of my ear, cocked an eyebrow and looked at him.  He asked me to give him my bag and to open the pockets for him. I did so, wearing a look of half-amusement and half-annoyance.  He opened my bag and gave it a pretty cursory run through, not even really moving things aside as he looked through it, more looking into it than through it.

Then they gave me my bag back and sent me on my way.

Apparently, from some reading I am doing and what I am hearing from friends, I had the right to refuse a search of my bag, and then to leave the subway. Had I known, I would have done so.

This bothered and offended me. All in the name of safety, I know.

I'm disappointed in myself for not knowing my rights insofar as refusal of search goes. Now I know, though.

you had the right to refuse search and board the public transportation
system, your tax money goes to pay for it, it's your right to use it

I could have left the subway and tried to enter through another entrance, but not the one where they were set up.

Im just saying, for the vast majority of things that tax money funds you certainly do not have the right to use them.

That's pretty stupid if they're only doing it at single entrances.

Say a terrorist with a bomb is actually heading in that direction. All they have to do is turn around and go to another entrance if they see the police or refuse the search and leave.

This is the same stupid logic as border crossings. When going across a bridge into another country they check you AFTER you've gone over the bridge. There's nothing to stop someone from loading a transport truck with explosives and blowing up the bridge.

its a scare tactic

You got profiled my friend, they were looking for a drug
bust, not a bomb bust. So sad they take advantage of this
terrorist situation.

Resisting, assault, dead children, slaughtered puppies.

All of the above would have been a fine alternative.

I probably wouldn't make it worse and resist or anything, but I might "accidentally" pee/poo myself in the squad car... it's a condition I've had for a while officer, I'm easily startled when nervous and it just comes out!

This man suffers from a bad sphincter!

That's also a good tactic if someone tries to ass rape you...  :super:

I don't think they'll enjoy it anymore.
