shriveling during drying?
    #1308944 - 02/14/03 11:11 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Not sure if this should be in the advanced forum or what.

now i'm a newbie.. but i have a question maybe somone can answer, my friend has got mushrooms a few times before which were perfect in shape with no shriveling? does anyone know how this is attained since all of the other times he got them they were shrivveled?

perhaps were they buried in dessicant? dont they have techniques like that for flower preservation of shape etc.?

another theory is they were vacuum sealed in a jar with dessicant to dry...is this possible? do you need air for the evaporation from the mushroom to the desiccant?

if this has been answered before please do post a link.

Maybe the unshrivelled ones just weren't dry enough.

dessicant is a poison its not recommended to eat.

Since Shrooms are mostly water there really isn't any way to dry them without wrinkles. The only way I've ever heard of to keep them mostly preserved is in honey I've seen jars full of them that look almost the same as they did when growing.

no, my friend said they were rock hard, had alot of shape with no wrinkles... I know it is possible to attain this somehow... I guess I answered my own question with the vacuum seal drying... (seems like the only candidate; BUT it would be valuable if anyone knew the way some people use to dry flower specimins?) and as I understand it the burying idea doesnt sound so good but calcium chloride really is just rock salt (so i hear. have to search google.com if you really are interested)

thanks for the attempts but somone has got to have info on this.

EDIT; correction; rock salt is Sodium Chloride I am pretty sure... I heard differently before. but i am pretty sure it is non toxic

I coudn't see something thats over 90% water keeping its shape without shriveling, it doesnt sound possible.

Ok, bear with me, I have no HTML skills

Somewhere here (i.e. search) there is a tek for drying mushies with dry ice, that dehydrates them and maintains shape. This is the only way i can think of ....

I've never, in my life, seen a dry mushroom that was not wrinkled all to hell.

Hypothetically, one could displace the H2O with acetone and then introduce a plastic into the solution.

This plastic, after the acetone evaporated off, would harden to hold the original shape of the organism. This technique has been use to mummify dead animals and works extremely well.

But, you'd notice this while eating

I wouldn't eat it, but most dessicants are non-toxic.

Okay, I think I may have answered my own question with 1 simple search from GOOGLE.COM
EDIT: this is for FLOWERS... now I would assume that this would still apply to mushrooms.

EDIT: no need for excerpt. the link is interesting but (nextpost)further down is a better link on the actual process of freeze drying.

Some bastard dealers sell mushrooms that are not completely dry for they are heavier. More weight = more $$$.

First they are dehydrated, and then they are put into the freeze dryer to dry??
I woudn?t belive anything that comes from this source.

I also wonder what the hell they ment by dehydrating THEN freeze drying; but the main thing is that a freeze drying method would be optimal... and perhaps a cheap vacuum sealer like a foodsaver coupled with desiccant might work?... now I'm not positive that the desiccant would still work in a vacuum sealed environment. but it seems like it would, just slower.

Actually, desiccant would work better and faster in a vacuum. When pressure is reduced water evaporates quicker, speeding up the drying process.

So, we're talking about dried cubes with a thin plastic coating? I get all the nutritional value from plastic that I need at MacDonalds.
