Monotub, why holes? * 1
    #13085982 - 08/22/10 10:53 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Does a monotub REALLY need holes? I've read that some people cover the holes during incubation, and some fan their monotub during the fruiting stage. If I decided to cover the holes am I risking perilous CO2 buildup?

What is the purpose of the holes in the monotub? I would like to know before I drill holes in my pretty tub. Thanks.

Can't get mushrooms without fresh air. It's that easy.

Surely fresh air can be delivered by fanning, with no hole drilling required? Or is fresh air required for colonization too?

if you constantly open the lid or top of your monotub to fan it you are opening yourself to almost certain contamination. the holes are there to provide fresh air without risking the sterility of your tub.

Are you sure about this? A fully colonized substrate should resist contamination just like a cake shouldn't it?

Once the mycelium has totally colonized the monotub it will be pretty damn resilient against contams...how do you think shotguns work :laugh2:

There are holes in a monotub for three reasons....

1) Keep humidity levels up/in check

2) Provide FAE when you aren't around to open it up and manually fan it

3) To allow GE during colonization, while also maintaining a high c02 environment which is needed during colonization.

You need some gas exchange during colonization. Not much.
You can provide sufficient FAE by fanning alone, it can be done. It's kind of a PITA though.

I've had monotubs without holes and fanned them manually 3-4 times a day. Fruits were ok, but little taller and lighter. I didn't dunk them and they yielded with around 40-70% of their potential. You can get fruits, but expect contamination after 2nd flush.
