alright here are the mushrooms i found today i think they look like they are pan or maybe copelandia cyans i read in the mushroom hunting faq here that copes turn brown when moist. these are moist and brown and have similar features. although ive never found any mushrooms that ive actually studied before so, i hope u can help me. i will post pics when i get them loaded im on 56k.

a. Habitat (where and what does it grow on)
cow dung
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
gills are gray and attached
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
about 1/2 to an inch across the caps and the stems were about 1 1/2in long
maybe two.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
stem was a dark tan color and was smooth with ridges near the cap. hollow
and very thin.
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, concical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
cap was the same color maybe a little darker and it had rings and a nipple. its
shape was spherical and it was sticky
f. Spore print color (very important!)
looks to be a dark color black with maybe maybe some brown
g. Color that the mushroom briuses
a dark deep blue looks like black but ive never heard of any mushroom that
bruised black. correct me if im wrong here
h. Scent of mushroom
not very strong mild is what i would call it.

thanks in advance for ur time. peace

Its pronounced as Co-pro-feel-ya
and also by others a cop-ro-pha-la.

mj

not psychoactive.

If you would like to see Copelandia's than go to my site at:

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species.htm

click on the Copelandia name. There are 2200 images of 59 species of psilocybian mushrooms shown at that section of my site.

it's sub-bal-teatus, as it's a direct composite of two [greek] words, translating literaly as "sub-belted".

Cool stuff, thanks man.

I think I might start a thread about pronuncations. I have no knowledge of greek or latin so I can really butcher scientific names if I try.

You're going to get some interesting disagreements with various people on how to pronounce some of the names.

The majority of the professional mycologists I know pronounce Psilocybe as sigh-loss-ih-bee (third syllable is a short "i" as in sit) with the accent on the second syllable. I personally prefer sigh-low-sigh-bee with the accent on the first syllable. Incidentally, The Mushroom Hunter's Field Guide by Dr. Alexander H. Smith and Dr. Nancy Smith Weber (which has a pronounciation guide) lists both. If you look around you can probably find an "authoritative" guide which will say something different from either of those.

Unfortunately, I don't have a guide which lists a pronounciation for "subbalteatus", and I have not heard a professional pronounce it. I would guess sub-ball-tee-ah-tuss, with the accent on the second syllable.

I've had some really fun debates with some people who are determined to see these names pronounced the way they think they should be. In the end, we should remember that these names are a means of communication, so if you choose a pronounciation that's too different from everybody else you will find yourself unable to communicate. Although I'm not always fond of the way the professionals pronounce them, I still need to learn and use their way around them so we can have a conversation.

Happy mushrooming!
