Stretching a syringe out a bit.
    #1306765 - 02/13/03 11:57 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

SO I got a couple of syringes of Morrel Spores, and one of Shiitakis.

My FOAF innoculated his growing medium with them. He find that the teks discussed here lend themselves well to growing all kinds of mushroom mycelium for later transplanting to outdoors.

Anyhoo....

When he got down to the end of each syringe, he noticed that there was a nice ring of spore clumps around the end of the syringe....but he had used up all of the water/solution.

So he figured that these spores where probably still viable, and he had innoculated all of the jars he wanted to inoculate, but maybe wanted some spores for later...SO Ihe got himself a bright idea.

He mixed up some honey in a pyrex tupperware type container (Martha Stewarts better living!) he nuked this for three rounds of 1 minute 30 seconds. (Four minutes 30 secs total) (He had wiped out the container and lid with alcohol pretty well, it was pretty clean, Im sure).

Then he let this cool down for an hour or so untill it was room temp.
Using a glove box he took his empty syringes with the ring of spores in them, and poked them through the plastic lid, and sucked up the honey water, leaving a little bubble of air in the syringe.

He's got them sitting somewhere kind of warm, and hope that the spores germinate and create an injectable liquid mycelium that he can use later.

Does this sound viabvle and workable? ANy reason that this might not work? Aside from contams...which he feels he was pretty carefull with....How do you feel this will work?

It will work depending on the honey/water ratio. check out one of the honey teks for exact measurements. i had good luck with it.

i suppose so. i would have just sucked up some sterile water to resuspend the spores, but it's fun to experiment.

good luck

I know someone who refills thier syringes with distilled water when they are almost empty. This way instead of doing 10-12 jars with one syringe, he can do up to 24 without much of a difference in spore germination. Just shake it up, there's tons of spores in there that will re-mix with the new water. The honey method ought to work too!

It was a little less then a teaspoon of honey in a little less then a 1/2 pint of water.

Would this be too much honey?
He hasnt seen any sign of germination yet, in either the syringes or the jars he innoculated.

There is another new, unused syringe with some other kind of mushroom spoors in it. And it looks as those has germinated in the syringe! There are a couple of fluffy white clouds of mycelium with spoor clumps suspended in them inside the syringe.

This isnt bad is it?
My understanding is that there would have to be some kind of nutrients in the water in order for the spoors to germinate?

Should that syrine be used fairly soon then? And will THAT mean faster colonization as the spoors have already germinated?
