Garden Books Thread
    #13065335 - 08/17/10 05:10 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I don't have too many books really...not a huge budget here.  I've still managed to collect some books that I like to keep around for reference and I am always getting books from the library.  I KNOW others here have many books and I thought it might be fun to take pictures of my shelves and share.  I didn't get every last book or anything in here and there's plenty of things hidden away between these books but thought some of you would maybe like to see.  I'd enjoy seeing pics of other peoples' shelves as well.

EDIT: There's one book I'm always referring to that wasn't on those shelves because it gets used so much.  Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Jim Pojar and Andy MacKinnon.  I had to come edit this post as it would be incomplete without at least mention of the book.

Nice books

I don't own a single gardening book:crazy:

I've been wanting to get a book or two for identifying mushrooms though. As well as a book to identify native/common plants in the area.

Not a single one?!  Good field guides are wonderful resources.  Finding ones that are local is great...here in the PNW I like "All that the Rain Promises and More" by David Arora as a pocket-sized guide with good pictures and information.

Nice little library. I wouldn't mind borrowing one or two of those.

Sadly most of my books are in storage in NZ and what I have now are in boxes but I do have a few mushroom books at hand and have just recently bought How To Identify Mushrooms To Genus 3: Microscopic Features by David Largent. A great book if you're looking at using a microscope to identify mushrooms.

Most reference books I source at libraries as I have a small budget too and also find shifting books between countries to be cumbersome and expensive.

Oooh nice pick karode!  I'll have to remember that book for when I eventually get a microscope (at least I hope to get one eventually hehe).  At least you got some books back home but it's sad they're not doing you any good in storage.

Yeah the books back home are the ones I miss the most but I make do for now without them. I'm just grateful that the libraries here have good reference material for me to peruse.

I've found a lot of weird/interesting books at the thrift stores too.  There's many conventional books that seem directed towards housewives but once in a while I find some that I really like.  If you ever want to buy a cook book there's plenty to be had second hand haha :P

no doubt!  if i could only cook and follow the directions lol.

The garden of eden is not the one linked.  i mean this one.  runs $100AUD, worth every penny of it.  stop drinking and buying weed for a bit to save up for it if need be.

Garden of Eden by Snu Voogelbreinder
http://www.troutsnotes.com/sc/snu.html

It basically dos what schultes, hoffman, ratsch tried with their various encyclopedias...but this one is actually good...

i am also a sucker for travel books about botany.  i just picked up a used hardcover of a botanist that traveled all through the Philippines collecting plants....i love those kinds of books.  used book stores are about as fun to search through as nurseries...almost.

I can't believe the grip this book has over my imagination. Does anyone here own a copy? I'm so intrigued by it...

This.

Can you tell us anything about it Kadakuda? What's the author doing differently from Ratsch?

I loved Ratschs' book (Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants), but I feel the information was a little bit spread. I'd go so far as to call his cultivation section lacking, but I loved the history/folk names/chemistry/dosage sections.

Oh and the photos.

The description says it encompasses psychoactive animals too, I dont suppose you could elaborate just a bit on which ones?

Please?

this book is like a reference book.  i love it.  the print is small, so it takes me a good 10 mins to read one page.

the bibliography is massive, which is VERY important.

there are no photos, but has some drawings of plants.

not much cultivation info.

this is a book about species and taking them.

the first part is about using, spirituality, safety and all that jazz.  second part is alphabetical by Genus species...it covers animals, fungi and plants...and believe me, it covers more than you thought there were that contained fun stuff.

it is the best book i own on psychedelic plant stuff, hands down...period.i have quite a lot of books too.  but if you like pictures and fun to read descriptions, not this book.  this book is all simple facts and talk about importance.  no frills.  which is why it is so good, a book of this size, without wasted pages on pictures really does contain  a LOT of information...i have had it for about 6 months and i can say i am not a tenth the way through.  tend to read what interests you the most.

it covers everythign we grow her ein this forum, plus some lesser knwon stuff and some things that are not necessarily hallucinogenic.  some animals include toads, fish and giraffes.  and of course mushrooms.

dont get me wrong, i enjoyed schultes, ratsch ad all them.  but they spend more time on other areas and have lots of pics, this book is more towards teh use/chemistry and identification.  it talks about the uses as well.  where schultes may write an entire chapter on how peyote is used and his experiences, this book is more along the lines.  peyote has 1% XX, 3%abc and 3.1% bpa and is sued by such and such this way.  and give references to back it up (somethign i find lacking in other books).

if this is the area you like, and like reading information, get the book before its gone.  no idea how many are left, but i wouldnt wait...
