There was another post regarding Valerian, and i didn't get a chance to say anything about it, so i'll take the time to clear it up now.

Valerian does not nor has it ever contained any chemicals that are similar to Valium or any other Benzo. However it does have sedative effects. Also, the chemicals in valerian root are toxic to rapidly growing cells, like the ones in your liver. So be careful, and as some of you may know there are studies goign on right now trying to determine the toxicity of Kavalactones to rapidly-growing cells (hence why some places have banned it or put warnings about liver toxicity and persons that have Hepatic problems like Hepatitis or Cirrhosis or any other liver disease).

Now for the good stuff:

The plant has little volatile oils but the oils it does have contain Terpene-like chemicals, one is called isovaleric-acid it is a short chained fatty-acid (quick get out the general bio book!!!). Another portion of the volatile oils contains a class of chemicals known as valepotriates . There are also a small group of nitrogen based alkaloids that are not believed to contribute to valerian's sedative effects.

As a side not the valeriopropriates break down very easily when in solution. So don't buy tinctures. And when you make them use them quick.

Also, Valerian varies widely between species and due to growing conditions, so your milage may vary.

Okay I'm done now, goodbye.
