Humanitarian disaster and other irrelevant concerns
    #1305526 - 02/13/03 12:44 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Ol' Bushy says the UN will become irrelevant if it don't support his war.

I think it will if it does.

If Saddam steps aside, then the USA could just go in and start taking the oil, rather than blowing up the country, then taking the oil. I wonder if he will. Would you? Could he even trust the USA would let him? Would you? 'he tried to kill my daddy'

The USA would probably blow up the country anyways...terrorist cells...no dought...

pre-emptive strikes against challengers to the new US authority...hell, could even revive the old war againt communism...that was the best perpetual war excuse ever. Those arabs are commies right? Don't they spend some of that oil money on their citizens?

So you think its fucked up if he steps down, and you think its fucked up if the US goes to war? What do you propose should be done?

I think the USA should stop threatening Iraq with war.

Ok, but do you think he should be left in power, to let his country fall further into ruins. I mean, I could care less if they leave him in power and Iraq implodes upon itself, but at this time, that doesn't look like it has any chance in hell of happening.

What should we do? huh?
Well, remove the sanctions. Let the Iraqis change their government alone.
Independent countries don't need other countries to change their government.
I'm sure that right now people support Saddam simply because they are anti-american (and with good reasons too).

Well, remove the sanctions

The sanctions are in place because Iraq lost the Gulf War and signed a surrender agreement, Iraq has failed to live up to that agreement, therefore the sanctions were put in place to try to force Sadaam to live up to the agreement.

Let the Iraqis change their government alone.

Since that has worked so well in the past..........

Bush wants UN support so that they clean up after he has his party.

I believe the best solution is to let Saddam die of old age, while keeping close watch over him with inspectors, satellites, and spies. I lean towards isolationist policies.

Unfortunately it takes someone as cruel and iron-fisted as Saddam to hold that shithole together. When the US goes in, they will simply become the new Husseins, but it will be worse because they will be ruling over a people who hate them. It will be an endless warzone, a playground for terrorists.

I tend to be thinking along the same lines. While I am opposed to all-out warfare, I don't think we should just let him be. Increase inspectors, increase humanitarian aid, and let the bastard die.

We all know sanctions will do nothing to deter Saddam, all they do is make life hard for the Iraqi people, many of whom would probably like to see Saddam out of office (as he's the one fucking them over causign the sanctions to be in place).

Yes, but you must remember that the US hasn't been too successful when it comes to regime change. Things seem to work out in the beginning, until we pull out due to other interests.

Why, so Iraq can fuck with its neighbors without any attempt to stop them? If you were a Kurd, living north of Iraq I bet you wouldn't want to remove those sanctions.

HAHAHAHAHAHaHahahahahahhahaaha, ok that just might work b/c Saddam might get tired of so much power and since he and his military control Iraq, I'm sure they'd love to change their govt to something limiting his powers.

One of the best ideas I've heard in a long time. Certainly a better solution than war. Saddam can't live forever...

..although he could go Walt Disney on our ass, freeze his body and come back 100 years into the future pissed off with one hell of a hangover.
