Spore Death By Mailbox? A Texas Experiment
    #13050790 -

I live about 20 miles north of downtown Dallas. I got up this morning and the forecast predicts a high of 103 with a low of 81 (all temps in this post are Fahrenheit). This is my first attempt to grow mushrooms and I'm failing. I have followed the PF Tek for shiitake and B+ exactly and I'm not seeing any growth after 15 days. I also injected a bag of rye grain, still no growth. Jars and bag kept in closet between 75 and 80 degrees. I did order my syringes from a non-sponsor but I also wanted to make sure my spores weren't dying in my mailbox, because it is ridiculously hot here in Texas. Anyway, I threw a bunch of temp gauges in my mailbox this morning and recorded the temp periodically.

My mailbox:

Inside my mailbox:

Time and temps inside my mailbox:

I stopped the experiment here because it's not getting any hotter outside or inside my mailbox. I believe the brick layer around my box is keeping it relatively cool.

Here on the other hand is an experiment done in St. Louis, Missouri on a standard metal mailbox without a brick layer. It reached 136:

So in conclusion, my mailbox is not killing my spores. I've read that spores are ok as long as they stay below 120?

Any tips or comments please...

If that's as hot as they got, then the spores should have been ok. IMO. But no telling what happened before they got to you.

I was worried about my syringes I got in the mail about 2 weeks ago because I live in the desert and they were actually hot to the touch when I received the package. They were all fine and are growing now. High temps that week were 112 F.

You should try a different vendor. A Shroomery sponsored vendor at that.

Cool mailbox.  I'll bet mine up here at elevation near the Canada border, on a hot sunny day gets hotter than yours.  As said, the bricks probably saved you.  If they're not growing, it's something else.

Let's see.  20 miles north of downtown.  That should be about a line of farmers branch/lewisville/flower mound/coppel.  Just trying to remember my DFW geography.  I lived down there in the 1970s.  It's way too hot and crowded for my tastes.  I'm whining up here because it gets into the mid 80s during the heat of the afternoon.  At least it drops down to 45 or so at night.

Yep, good old Flower Mound. You wouldn't believe how much it has grown...exploded really. They had to ban construction there for a while. It's a hot boiling cluster.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll order from a sponsor and start over. This is getting expensive but I'm not giving up!
