Invitro, mycelium, and light
    #1305035 - 02/13/03 09:46 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I am wondering...hypothetically...if somebody was going to grow in-vitro, how many hours of light a day (approximately) is required for optimum results?

Would someone need to change lighting patterns once his in-vitro jars started fruiting?

Expose them to light when you want to initiate pinning. A couple of minutes a day is enough.

hmmm, i'd guess a couple minutes will do nothing. i'd recommend at least an hour, probably more like 2 or 3. if it were legal, i'd use 10 to 12 hours with success.

Yep, Bilge is right, you need a lot more that a few minutes, treat them like fruiting cakes, or casings. I would even air them out once in a while after you got primordia formation, or better yet put them on their lids(upside down), with the lids loosened, to allow air exchange. I never tried this, but sounds promissing.

I suggest that you join Bilge in reading The Mushroom Cultivator , page 147, "The Influence of Light on Pinhead Formation".

i wish i had that book.

does it say what the lower duration limit is for causing pins? there has to be a lower limit. i mean turning the light on for 1/1000th of a second doesn't do it, does it? and i would expect it would depend some on the brightness of the light, i.e., the number of photons striking the mycellium.

quote from TMC...

"... more pinheads are initiated upon exposure to blue and untra-violet light with distinct peaks at 370, 440 and 460 nanometers.... light stimulation at these wavelengths for as little as half a millisecond per day caused primordia to form."

Ok, Now think about this, when mushrooms are outside and growing naturally about how much light do they get a day?
Mushrooms are phototronic(ithink that's the word) they grow towards light, ask Anno, he mentions this in his stop motion thread.

The original poster was talking about growing invitro. The fact that cubies are phototropic is of no consequence.

Have the jars exposed to light while colonizing for best results.

many people argue whether or not mushies grow towards light. please read page 112 in stamets' GG+MM... (don't even have to be able to read, just LOOK at the damn picture)
