help - Jars doing nothing
    #1304616 - 02/13/03 06:32 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I recently innoculated 12 jars using the MMGG. I have grown once before and did not have this problem. However out of the 12 innoculated, only 3 have shown signs of growth and its been nearly 15 days. The 3 that are showing growth are about 30-50% colonized. I have stored the jars at a temp around 75-80. Also I used PES Hawaiians if this helps. Should I reinnocluated? I also read about the current tek that has you put a colonized jar of BRF in a ziplock bag with uncolonized substrate and then crumble and mix. Would this work? Please help me guys!!

raise your temps if you can. doing anything un-sterile with uncolonized substrate is asking for contams, imho.*inoculate*

i did everything in a sterile room while running a hepa filter. All tools were cleaned and all surfaces sterilized. I wore a mask and surgical gloves and turned off the air an hour beforehand.

Can anyone help me? Also today i noticed one of my jars has an orangish tint on specks in the mycelium. I heard this is normal with mycelium when using BRF. Is this true? Did TLG possibly send me some bad syringes? Help!!!!!!

How much water did you use in your substrate recipe? Also, if some of the mycelium turns an orangish yellow, it may be dead mycelium. Watch to see if it spreads quickly, or at all.

i used 1/2 cup plus 1.5 tablespoons for each jar - however one of my jars expanded and i think some water might have leaked through the tin foil. All the other jars look normal however

PES Hawaiian is supposedly a slow colonizer. I wouldn't be suprised if that was teh cause.

Any color other than white is not good and indicates possible contamination.

Those jars are not colonizing for a reason. To re-inoculate would probably be a waste of time and spores.

is it just me or does the water content seem to be a little high?
i usually read the recipe to be something along the lines of:
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup BRF
1/2 cup verm.

i may be wrong, if i am i apologize, and will reformulate my jars accordingly.

It's not just you.

If you are using the pf recipe, 1/2 cup of water per jar is way too much.

you might want to loosen a lid and smell it...if it smells sour, it is contaminated. Look in the FAQ of common contaminants. It is called sour rot... a friend of mine had the same problem of non-colonization. This contaminant is detectable if the substrate appears soggy or oversaturated w/ water. I would smell them to be sure though.

I'd say prepare more jars, then once one of your jars is done crush it up and do a transfer......Your new jars will be ready very fast!
