Efficiency side by side experiment.
    #13045492 - 08/13/10 09:31 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

This is in response to DocT's suggestion in this thread.

The idea is do a rough comparison of the biological efficiency of varying substrates.

So I thought my contribution could be a simple comparison of popcorn, millet, and wbs trash (sunflower, safflower, sticks, etc..).

Here's the jars:

Now obviously I didn't just make these, the pcorn are almost colonized, the millet is off to a fast start, and the wbs trash is freshly inoculated. The wbs trash sat on a shelf for over a week and didn't contamn, so it should be fine. I gave it a little extra sterilization.

The reason I even separated out the trash from the millet was for Hamloaf's benefit.

The numbers on the front of the jars is the weight of the contents of the jar in grams.

Now here's the disclaimers:

1. I didn't weigh the dry grain out.
2. The millet has verm in it. The wbs had cracked corn and was sticky. So I added an unmeasured quantity of verm to it b4 loading.
3. I didn't measure how much lc I inoculated with.

So, these methodology problems basically render my results meaningless. But I thought it'd be fun to walk thru the process itself.

I'm up in the air about what to use to fruit em. I'm definitely going with coir/verm, but the question is whether or not to go with gypsum.

I suspect that the pcorn as the least nutritious might need the gypsum to perform up to it's potential. But it might be interesting to see how it performs just on coir/verm. So this is what I'm leaning towards, just coir/verm.

For FC I thinking 6 qt dubtubs shotgun style, watering once per day, no fanning. Nice and simple. I'll probably just make 3 of em with 2 quarts spawn each. I'm too lazy to build 6 of em.

Feel free to clutter up this thread. If I manage to follow thru I'll write up a nice clean log later.

You weighed them- did you measure the volume? They look about the same, are they?

I just eyeballed em. It's a coincidence that they came out so close. I can't expect any valid numbers out of this...it's just about the method.

Unless you get some wild result like the trash outproducing everything else. Isolate? Clone?

they are all from the same karo lc, PES isolate.

Well, I should specify that I didn't sector it out on agar. People are so picky about this jargon.

I took the first pin to pop up from a MS and cloned it. The pin itself fruited prolifically and so I just yanked a nice looking pin from there and tossed it in a karo lc.

Here is the agar jar presently:
