Gun safe?

I've always heard that safes are good if you're served a search warrant, because you don't have to give them the combination. Is this actually true? Assuming you get raided and they do have a search warrant, do you have to open the safe for them? Or can you tell them to kindly fuck off? (Not in those words, of course)
Further, what if it's a gun safe, can they try to pull something like "I need you to open your safe so I can inspect or take your guns" or something? What if the safe absolutely reeks of pot and a drug dog alerts on it?
Essentially, is there any excuse under which they can make you open that safe? Or is there any circumstance where they can try to open it themselves?
Thanks.

Don't ya know? These cocksuckers do whatever they want when they want. Laws and your rights are merely a technicality. If things get to the point they are kicking in your door nothing in you life if is "safe" from them.

If there is a warrant, nothing is safe from the prying eyes. Sorry sir this is my magic box, you can not open it... remember what happened in Raiders of the Lost Ark... yeah that. Not gonna work.

So, what happens if you refuse to give them the combination, do they hire someone to break into it? Can you be arrested for refusing to give them the combination?

You can't be forced to give them the combination, but if you don't cooperate, they'll have someone crack it for them and there's a good chance you'll be out a gun safe.

Of course you can. They can subpoena a document with the combo on it and subpoena you to testify as to the combination.
Depending on the circumstance, they may or may not have to give you immunity prior to doing so- the law on this subject is a bit strange and I'd guess it really isn't something that would affect you unless you've got a heavy duty safe and they have reason to be so persistant.
The bigger problem is that if they have a warrant for your house for things that could fit in the safe, they can likely demand you open it and if you refuse then open it themselves. The majoirty of gun safes I've seen are shitty things that are only good for preventing an unmotivated person from accessing the contents. They are often constructed of shitty material that could easily be breached by a person with normal tools since a decent safe would be pretty expensive to make if its going to hold rifles and such.
For most safes you'd buy I'd imagine they'd get some override code (electronic and perhaps some manual) or find out where the weak points are and drill the thing for a relatively cheap price they'll make you pay anyways.
If your buying a commerciall made safe, I'd make sure you know the practices of the manufacturer, they often are in bed with the government, and will sell you out for the price of a five-minute long distance call to their headquarters.
In this case, for example, all it took was a phone call from someone claiming to be a fire department and fifteen minutes. How safe does that make you feel? http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2007/08/boy_10_gets_loc.html

Pretty much every gun safe comes with a serial number, for whatever reason. This serial number corresponds to A) your combination and B) with most safes, a key as well. I'd assume if they could get either, you're fucked, and they probably can. I'm not even fire department, and I've helped people get their combo's at my job. All I do is sell the thing.

The serial number wouldn't help with my Fort Knox as I've had the combo changed.
I have no doubt however that if the cops wanted into my safe, they'd get in one way or another.

I'd give them the combo... but forget to tell them about the grenade wired up to it.
Hey, they didn't ask!

They wouldn't waste the time... They would cut it open with a chop saw or torch. If the cops didn't have their own they might call the fire department. Than a fire fag would come out and open it up with a saw or the jaws of life; all the while sporting wood because he gets to pretend to be a cop for a while. Even an expensive gun safe could be opened up with relative ease with the right tool. A search warrant gives the law the right to basically tare apart or trash everything in your house looking for whats on the warrant.

Probably not the brightest move if they want to preserve any evidence. Fire and sparks don't mix well with gunpowder and explosives.
