Since creamcorn aint gonna answer me
    #13036327 - 08/11/10 12:49 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I know you're busy, buddy, I stopped crying hours ago, it's okay.

Surely he's not the only one to grow out one of the old homestead kits back in the day. How were they? I've heard they weren't that good.

theyre still around. a friend of mine bought one a coupla years ago.
nothing wrong with their method, untill it comes time to fruit.
their instructions tell you to fruit it in the bag, and to let the spores drop,
so they will germinate, giving you another flush.
he paid $100.

so, too expensive, and very poor advice included.

spores recolonizing living myc is akin to cumming on your stomach and a baby growing like a tumor out of your bellybutton..

i hadn't noticed you asked anything bro sorry its a big forum

i never actually grew from the kit, per se. it was given to me and was kept around more a collectible.

it was several years old by the time it reached my (then newbie) hands. passed from person to person who were overwhelmed by the directions and never bothered actually using it to its completion, though i did play with the print on agar, with minimal success. (nothing at first, re-visited much later and had some growth, was pumped at the prospect of having revived a really old print then stupidly failed at isolating/transferring after!) i might even still have said print somewhere, chances of it being still viable are very low, chances of it being sterile still, lower yet...

there's a lot "right" with their process in theory, and would have worked with some supplemental information (or experience), but at the same time some of it didn't make sense when combined with what was actually IN the kit. basically, it was at the exact opposite end of the spectrum from a pf-tek in difficulty.

it was a bulk style grow. it explained how to swipe agar; how to transfer and isolate. of course they lead you to believe everything is in the box, but the manual suggested you built this behemoth glovebox/desk contraption... at least there were plans for it.

so anyway, you got your isolate on agar. next you use a chunk to inoculate your grain. your grain? yeah, they included a test tube full. we're talking like three tablespoons of grain.

once that was colonized, you were to spawn it to their "growth medium" - i presume was some kind of compost, looked strikingly similar to plain potting soil.

so assuming you got that far, and colonized your "growth medium"... you'd have something a little larger than a pf cake. all that work for that.

i believe there was also a casing mix included. also looked like another bag of potting soil.

i do not recall what was suggested for fruiting, come to think of it.

i still have the booklet and the box (and maybe even a bag of dirt inside) around here somewhere. maybe some time ill scan the booklet and share for nostalgia sake, if i can hunt that down.

if you want my opinion on it; they had the right idea but it was not a good kit. it was far from beginner friendly. the quantities of the things included were way skewed - probably 20 petri dishes, yet only a test tube full of grain? they told you to run out and buy all these materials to make their glovebox contraption, why not tell you to buy the grain? the directions were sketchy and sparse, but not necessarily incorrect. so given the print, agar, and petri dishes, a little bit of prior knowledge, and chucking everything else included, you could have gone nuts. following the directions and using only the things provided, i think most who purchased would have been sorely disappointed.

it did do one thing: it got the ball rolling, got me interested. read through Stamets, pieced some things together, had some success (and lots more failures)... found the shroomery a while later, the rest is history...

i had the same thoughts, they basically show you how to spawn to bulk.
i dont know if dude's had petris and agar, he said he just dropped the swab right into the grain.
i dont think his had gb instructions either, just a video of faceless peopl,e holding big shrooms
and crap set to goofy music. no speaking, just music and a few subtitles.
seemed to me that barring the exhorbitant price, had they included plans for a shotgun or any
type of decent fruiting chamber it would have been actually been a good kit.
since they didnt, he got a crappy yield and gave up completely.

I started this endeavor oh so long ago with a shroom kit I bought at a headshop. Knowing what I know now, that was the most bass-ackwards way to go about it. Mine had me doing PF jars over an oven (instead of a glovebox or the like) and I don't think I got but one good colonized jar off of it. And even it didn't fruit, since the instructions weren't exactly clear....I think it had me casing with worm castings. Weird tek, looking back. And I spent a hundred bucks and didn't get shit for it.

If you're thinking of a kit, just let it go. Them shits are the suckage.

I just started in this hobby and I've outgrown 'kits', just like plants and people, fungus needs certain things to live, grow and reproduce. There has to be a million different ways to give your fungus what it needs, all I want are genetics. I got the genetic hookup too. This company I found that ships live myc, not spores, is teh awesome. Even though you don't do much it still helps with your confidence because you get to handle living mycelia that is ready to fruit, skipping all the risky spore work.

I'm itching to play with agar now, dammit:shake:

wait, i wrded that wrong,
i meant all the major spore suppliers are now getting a lot of emails wanting live cube cultures.

i dunno, im just saying if i had that hookup, i wouldnt post about it.
growing from spores is an essential skill anyway.

No my fault.

The company I order from only does this for established customers. It's not advertised. In fact I had no idea they dealt in mushroom anything until they contacted me.
