Any electrically minded folks? Need help with wiring!
    #1303885 - 02/12/03 11:05 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, I am putting together my HEPA glovebox and I need some help with wiring up a dimmer switch to my fan. Here's a quick rundown of the project: I have a large clear rubbermade type container. There will be 2 or more open armholes. On the side of the box is where the filters are mounted. The filters are 4.5"x4.5" HEPAs designed for Shark vacuum cleaners. The fans are mounted side by side. Pushing air through the fans I have a 6" inline duct booster fan rated at 250 cfm. I want to be able to control the speed of the fan so I bought a high quality fan dimmer switch. The fan has 3 wire leads: positive, negative, and ground. The dimmer has 3 wire leads: 2 positives and 1 ground. For a wall cord I cut the end off of a cord for a computer. Here is how I *think* this should all be wired together:

So, does that look right? If not, what needs to be changed??

One last question: the computer power cord has 3 sheathed wires, but I was thrown for a curve when I saw a 4th wire! It is unsheathed. What's the deal with that and what do I do with it??? I'd rather not have to go out and spend even more money on a new cord... I've spent far too much on this project as it is.

Thanks,

Uber

Well unless Shitakes, Maitakes and Portobellos are illegal, then no... I'm not.

the unsheathed wire maybe for added strength. if you have a multimeter you could see if it an additional ground (or you can make a simple circuit with a battery and bulb and see if it is connected to any of the pins. make sure the fan is suited to your mains voltage!

Thanks for the reply blackout! That's a very likely possibility you proposed, and I will borrow a multimeter from a buddy so I can test the theory. And yes, the fan is 110 volts so no worries there.

Hopefully I will have this thing up and running by tonight so I can post my design in case anyone else wants to try this out. I think I have an interesting cross between a positive pressure box and a flowhood. Most of the other P.P. box designs I've seen have used much lower powered fans than what I am using. My opinion is the increased airflow will make for a better box (harder for contams to get in, plus i should be able to get away with more armholes so i could have a partner assist me), plus with the dimmer switch I can always throttle it back when dealing with materials that could get swept up in a high speed flow of air.

Thanks again,

Uber

I don't mean to be anal, but, being an engineering student i'd like to point out that on an A/C system there is no positive or negative connections. There is neutral (white), black (load) and ground (green or bare.) The third wire in your cord might be for 3 phase A/C, 2 loads, one neutral and one ground.
