How do I save a strain?

I have this really kick ass oakridge strain that I isolated on agar a while back. It colonizes jars in 4 days and same with monotub's. I have been doing G2G with WBS jars to keep it going. I want to take a break from the growing for a bit so how do I preserve this stain? I got colonized WBS jars and an agar plate from like 4 months ago. Any tips?

Myc can survive for a little while in the fridge, or just fruit it and print it, i agree with fungal, to be doing agar you should know what to do in your down time

Do a search of 'master slants'
That's what you want.

i guess it depends on how long you want to keep it viable, and how much work you're willing to do.
the easiest thing would be to bag your agar dish and stick it in the fridge. it should stay good a few more months.
likewise, your grain jar itself will keep in the fridge several months (6ish)
these aren't hard limits. it may last quite a bit longer, on the order of a couple years.
a rule of thumb if you want to play it very safe, is to transfer to new agar every 6-12 months or so. each time you transfer, alternate mediums. so if you used PDA this time, revive it on some malt extract in 6 months; keep that for 6 months, revive it on some PDA again (or something different, even) and so on. the change in medium forces the mycelium to adapt its enzymes, think of it as kind of keeping it on its toes, to keep it vigorous.
many folks like to use slants for long term storage, essentially agar in test tubes, with the tubes held at an angle while the agar cools (hence, a slanted surface). not sure if there's a benefit from a time perspective, other than they take up less space and are sturdy.
it's also possible to keep mycellium in cold storage, simply suspended in nutrient-deplete distilled water, for long periods.
search the advanced forum for "storage" for some more ideas.

I do agar dishes in the fridge then every 12 months bring them out and transfer to a new dish.
I also do vacutainers of LC in the fridge for 6 months..

They do.
There is a paper on very long term storage that appears to be the duration winner.
The idea is that you store just mycelia in distilled H2O. Without nutrients, the fungus goes dormant.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the advise guys! lots of good reply's here. For the mean time it looks like I can just keep the agar dish in the fridge for a few more months then do a transfer. I'm going to have to look into the master slants. Thanks for the replys everyone!

Yeh I do mainly petri's and slants but a few vials of LC were usable after 6 months.
If you looking for a nice storage container I buy a nice whiskey from time to time and find I can stack the petris almost flush in the cardboard tube the bottle comes in
Just remember I think its the 80mm dishes for a standard tube, so you need a fatter one for the 90mm dishes...
