I let my PC depressurize for three hours last night before I shook the jars.  The grain is terribly hard to break up.  Even test jar didn't break up on bike tire.  I really don't want to stay up all night busy with this again.  Any quick advice?

Sounds like either too wet, failure to use gypsum, or you filled the jars too full.  If you prepare grains properly, you can wait overnight until they're cool, and they'll fall apart just by turning the jar upside down.  You shouldn't even have to shake, let alone bang on a tire.

I saw that gypsum has been discussed, and was well aware of it when using rye berries.  I must have overlooked it in docs tek last night.  Must they be tossed?

I think not shaking them soon enough and no gypsum is my problem. The grains were perfect, jars filled no more than half.

Meh, it'll colonize. Next time, add a pinch of gypsum.

I did a lot of work with WBS several years ago.  I blew it off since it's so drastically inferior to rye berries.

Rye is a lot easier it's true. Easier to prep, easier to spawn.

i am surprised just how hard it is to find rye berries in my town.
I thought you could buy common grains like that at the supermarket, or the very least at the feed store.
Turns out, when i ask at our grocer for Whole Rye Grain they don't even know what i am talking about. They hand me rye crackers, rye bread, rye flour, but none of them even seems to know that rye can come in grain form too.
And the feed store here is a mess, they give me the same strange look when i ask for rye.

One place, i was able to find rye, and that was the local health food store. They sell 500g Bags for 3.00$, and that is not quite what i was looking for.

I really wish i could work with rye, i just haven't been able to find any lately. I keep my eyes peeled wherever i go, but WBS is considerably easier to find than rye. So that's all i'm left with :frown: Maybe i need to talk to some of our local farmers, i am sure they would know where to find rye feed, or at least a supplier that can sell large(r) quantities. No luck so far however.

The rye berries sold by azurestandard.com which are what I use are grown in Canada.

why thank you, i might have to resort to order rye online.

It seems like i have to go through some effort to get my grains either way, i'll mail all feed stores within a 50 mile radius and see if i have any success.

Rye is super-easy to get right. Once you get good with it, you can try other grains and see what is best for you in terms of cost and effort.
Some places, the feed store rye is seasonal. It may be called hard rye or winter rye. Stock up if you find it.

Whole food stores usually have rye too...I grabbed some hard winter wheat berries (I think that's what they were called) when they were out once and they worked reasonably well, but not quite like rye.  WBS does ok but is a pain in the ass...not to mention it smells like asshole if it gets nasty.
