Planning to start agar. Starting with MEA. Have read quite a bit but if anyone can add some clarification into the best places to find the ingredients and if MEA is indeed a good choice.
20 g malt or malt extract (powdered or syrup) Beer brewing supply store? Is there somewhere more convenient? 25 g agar Asian market? (there is one close by) 0.1 g potassium dibasic (K2HPO) No idea 0.1 g calcium carbonate (CaCO3) (basically powdered oyster shell) Pet store oyster shell? Just manually crush it?
Also, is there a certain size scalpel/blade you guys use? Do you use forceps or tweezers to transfer myc?

I use MEA, just malt and agar without the extra chemicals. Health food store might have malt extract, but a brew shop will for sure.

I use water, instant potato flakes, agar and honey. Works fine. A scalpel is highly recommended.

Yeah, true. You could use a steak knife or something in a pinch, but get a scalpel or a nice x-acto knife.
And make a nice glovebox, you want to be comfortable while you work.

-------------------- AMU
Terence McKenna Said:
"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."

Thanks DocT. If there's one thing I've learned, it's a very good idea to not "be in a pinch" so I don't think I'll need to raid the good silver haha... I'm gathering everything necessary now so that I can be fully prepared to get started by the end of the month (by which time I will have made some nice Cambo and Allen prints).
BTW, in the desert, do you find contams to be much less of a problem? I have had absolutely zero problems keeping everything sterile. I've even tried to be a bit lazy about it to test the limits while making syringes, innoc'ing, etc. - cat running around, dirty kitchen, vents blowing, no gloves or mask, sterilizing needles less often, yadda yadda yadda. Obviously agar is really going to test the limits, so I'm wondering if even a still-air box will work. Although, I have absolutely no problem building a full blown glove-box (flow hood is a little out of the question tho).

Still air box will work fine for you. I get away with it, and this place is a contam fiesta- 100 year old building, former leaking roof, mice, etc.
