Yeah, making your own stuff FTW. I made a nice coffee table and a pretty big entertainment center.

Go for craislist stuff until you're ready to invest in some real nice stuff. When you buy top of the line furniture you get what you pay for. Flexsteel makes quality stuff and has lifetime guarantees on the cushions and springs I believe. I used to work at a furniture store if that means anything.
EDIT: Making furniture is also a great option, it's a lot easier than you might think and you can make it to your exact specifications.

It's funny because while you're looking for furniture it's so expensive and difficult but when you don't look sometimes stuff just finds you. I'm sitting in a goodwill chair right now and our house is full of furniture people didn't want. When we moved in, the the last tenant asked us if he could leave a bunch of tables, kitchen wares, couches, and he even got us beds that his friends upgraded from. We went from having very little furniture to putting up free craigslist ads and putting beds and tables out for free on the street.
One thing I would watch for is bed bugs, which are a pretty preventable pest but something you don't want to invite into your home. Especially furniture with lots of cloth I would give a thorough inspection and cleaning first.

Well, that's true, but goes along with common sense. When I was moving around a lot, I either bought some cheap stuff and left it there or would just keep my good stuff in my parents' storage space. That was back then, though. I have nice furniture now, because I have been pretty stable(for the most part) for the past 5 years.

My cheap furniture has lasted me over 10 years.
I certainly wouldn't call anything that depreciates in value an investment.

It's an investment in the sense that you will have a sweet place to set your ass for the next 10+ years.

1) Real leather furniture is going to be extra expensive 2) The mark-up in most furniture places is about 50-60 percent.

Bullshit. With the way the economy has been, I have heard of some department stores where they have been haggled down from the retail prices. That sounds fun to do. I am definitely going to try and talk some shit down. I'm sure it has to be at least a couple of hundred dollars worth of stuff, but I am thinking that it can be talked down at least 20-50 bucks.

we furnished our living room for 10$. Went to a furniture auction, nice white couch, 2 white arm chairs, and some 5 foot lamp for 10 bills.
Not a damn thing wrong with it the people sold it because they were moving into a smaller place

Well it is. Most won't do that, believe me. They'll just pay whatever is marked, no questions asked.
PrepH: Great! That's one way to beat the prices.

I bought my 3-seat reclining couch for $50 from a friend.
A brand new one would have cost around $800
