Ive got alot of grain spawn.. and im ready to make my medium size mono tubs.. the only thing is.. ive been searching for a good ratio for a substrate that will have most nutes and produces HUGE fruits.. is horse poo, coir, straw, verm and gypsum too much ?? ive got spent coffee grounds, but was told they dont have alot of nutes.. ??? if anyone could give me their opinion on the best substrate mix, id greatly appreciate it.. thanx

I think a bulk substrate Consisting of H.poo,Coco Coir/Vermiculite/Straw,gypsum would be a great bulk substrate...just so long as everything is pasteurized properly.

Without isolating a good culture, or at least a clone, there's no way to say much about resulting fruit size, potency, texture, etc.
That said, people brag on hpoo.

The simplest substrate blend I use with good results is, Coir, Used Coffee Grounds, Drywall Gypsum, and of course Water.
The mixture is: 70% Coir 20% Used Coffee Grounds 10% Drywall Gypsum Water - Enough to bring the mix to 'field capacity'
However, I have better results with this: 50% Straw 20% Cow Manure (bags bought in the store) 15% Coir 10% Drywall Gypsum 5% Used Coffee Grounds Water - Enough to bring the mix to 'field capacity'

Maybe my english is not good enough but what is "Drywall Gypsum"?. Do you crumble or pulverize a piece of drywall and use that?

Add some chicken manure and some gypsum to your bulk substrate mix. I have an unfinished writeup in my journal that explains how much to use. ~P~

For me it's more about performance than fruit size really.
The second mixture I posted out performs the first one in many ways, for me anyway.

i agree, a tub that puts out a lb of medium/high potency fruits is 10x better than a tub that puts out a lb of 20-30 huge ass fruits like this:

Nobody with a clue would have told you that. Coffee grinds are very high in mushroom food. If you want huge fruits for some reason, add up to 5% chicken manure to your other substrate ingredients. RR

In actuality fruit size, density of mushrooms, even potency can/will be affected by not only what food is available, but also what environment they are growing in (temps, air exchange, for example).
To any new readers here, there is DAILY misinformation like this about genetics, or claims that multispore inoculations resulted in a substrate not fruiting (when that is not necessarily the case). Ignore it. ~P~

nobody mentioned the obvious?
make your substrate deep enough. that's most of the battle.
mushrooms are roughly 90% water. by worrying ingredients and additives and all this, you're focusing on the 10%. if you want em big, they need plenty of water to draw on. the way to have plenty of water to draw on, is simply to have a lot of properly hydrated substrate.

Im not going to say i agree, but i just follow Damions5050 tek, it is great and easy, coir and verm, sometimes i use a little gypsum, sometimes i dont, i forget sometimes.
I use to do straw and coffee with the coir and verm, but these contaminate so damn easy for me, i had to cut them out, and my substrate is about 4 inches thick

obviously if your conditions are poor, your yield will suffer, but for every picture of your "great grow with 7 different additives that you grew under the full moon when venus was eclipsing uranus etc etc", i can show you a picture of big ass yields/fruits coming out of nothing but 4 bricks of coir spawned with 4quarts of rye that i spend about a whopping 10 seconds checking once a day.

I think all the additives are overrated, and complicate things. this is a personal opinion, and i'm in no way saying they are necessarily "useless"
To any new readers here, save your time and money on additives, get down the basics, and then work on isolating qualities you find desirable. if you do add anything, i believe that they should only be ones that assist in keeping out competing molds and bacteria.
