TranSpore 3M surgical tape.
    #1302557 - 02/12/03 11:38 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

Has a bit more porosity than tyvek & less than most filter disks, vendors sell. Gonna run some tests. Appears it would work on lids & the biggy, as a filter patch seal on autoclave bags & for sealing petri's. 6T (aka Mycota)

you think the adhesive would hold after autoclaving?

Not sure yet. But sure as cows ass stinks, if applied after autoclaving, it will hold.

Just stumbled into this stuff today, looking for a bandaid in the big first aid kit & have not had time to crank up the AA & see how well it holds, through & after PC'ing.

Will get it done today or tomarrow. The 3M site - says it can be sterilized. But, they don't explain how.

I suppose you could bind a filter patch sized portion to a bag via. epoxy, if the adhesive wouldn't hold.

I advise strongly against using that tape. It has a tendency to melt at certain temperatures, such as those sustained inside a pressure cooker. As far as 3M's claim to its ability to be sterilized, I haven't a clue how one would go about doing that. Perhaps isopropyl is to be applied in medical circumstances. However, this tape clearly cannot withstand high temperatures.

Cloth tape, on the other hand, seems to work quite well. It is nicely porous, the adhesive can endure several sterilizations, and you needn't worry about melting.

3M is most likely talking about chemical sterilization....What is the number inside of the roll, it looks like the LDPE for dressings......not autoclavable, the adhesive will prolly give first and then melt....

What I'm saying, so far is:

It "APPEARS" one could PC jars or autoclave bags, then apply this, as a gas exchange filter (or filter patch on an autoclave bag).

As stated,  I have not heat tested it yet. But, will, just to see.

Even if it will not withstand PC'ing. It still appears an effective "cold" filter tape.

6T

Currently use the stuff myself , works great for the little guy to cheap to but fancy filters and such , plus was given a whole case .....for "FREE" !
Used to cover holes in syringe inoced jars , to seal petris with prints in them , and to slow evaporation of moisture in agar cultures (my climate dictates this ....BOWELS OF HELL ) . Have a few other uses to boot , but those are important ones off top of head . I f concerned is too porous , just double layer it over itself ....theory being more layers criss crossing each other the harder for invaders to invade !
TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT !
The one made that looks more like cloth is better , does not melt and sticks a little better , IMHO .

You are correct. The TRANSPORE tape will not survive PC'ing. I just tried it.

But, the 3M tells me 3M MEDIPORE (soft cloth) tape will, as it is made from polyester fibers, same as filter disks & polyfil. Off to get some, now.
