A little snag w/ WBS

Following Doc's WBS tek:
I thought I had a few boxes of new lids. I got home, and realized I didn't. I have tyvek, and polyfil. I do have jar lids that have four holes in each corner, that I had made up when I was working w/ PF.
I don't have my drill or my bits with me. And no new lids. Can I use my PF lids, w/ some sports/medical tape? My grain is ready to go, I'm afraid it shouldn't soak any longer at all. It's on heat to boil right now anyway.
Thanks!

Tape two opposite holes shut with paper tape or foil something PCable. Enlarge one hole, add polyfil. Use the last small hole for injection, cover with plain scotch tape after shooting. Not RTV necessary, you can align the jar before you shoot- you can feel the poly puff, so you know the injection hole is opposite.

Paper tape. Paper... tape. Tape that is paper. Or something else PCable, which plastic tape is not.

If you're using Tyvek under and/or over the lid you should be ok. Don't bother reaming, air holes are air holes. Like I said in another thread before, I've seen lids with 1/4" hole in the middle and a smaller one with RTV for the injection point with just micropore over the 1/4" hole work just fine as long as tyvek is in place.

No, you need to seal the extra holes. Paper tape.
Paper
Tape.
Like... masking tape. Tape, made from paper.

simplest jar lids, very effective, my fave (and you probably have all you need already):
prep your grain & load your jar.
cut a square of tyvek bigger than the opening of the jar; screw a jar ring down over it to hold it in place. (no metal lid just the ring).
cover the top in foil and PC as usual.
for innoc, remove the foil and toss it... just poke your needle clean through the tyvek and squirt. poke in the middle and you can angle it to get 4 small squirts down each side of the jar. (i usually dry the top off with a paper towel if there's any moisture from pc'ing, and of course alcohol swab the bit you'll poke)
then immediately cover the top with a piece of duct tape (yes duct tape). it's not quite as wide as the opening of a standard jar - that's the idea. so run one piece down the center. this does two things: one, it covers the hole you made with the needle. then two, you have two strips of tyvek on either edge of the tape still exposed. this provides a perfect amount of gas exchange without losing any moisture during colonization.
it's so elementary and so effective... so few materials needed... safe to shake your jars along the way and no problems with contams and whatnot etc.

i know folks like their rings and gaskets and silicone goo and injection ports and other bells and whistles. but trust me, this works just fine. simple = good!

"Paper, tape" ....
I figured you were talking about masking tape. I was just making sure there wasn't something I had missed. I found lids, drilled 3/8, reamed a little bit, filled with poly fil, and am getting ready to PC. I am using a retired tyvek envelope, and following the tek to the T.
Thanks for all the advice.

Tyvek sucks for jar lids. Polyfil is where it's at man, don't believe the hype.

i use a piece of felt siliconed over the hole, so that the felt is exposed to the hole. It acts as a filter and works great.
