How much light do they need while in the FC? I have heard many different numbers such as 12 on 12 off or that i only need 3 hrs of light a day. How much do i really need? And if i use a artifical light, what type?

Use a daylight cfl bulb it works the best because mushrooms respond best to light around 6000k. There doesn't seem to be a real general consensus to exactly how often to keep the light on. I personally only keep it on about 6 hours a day. I personally don't think you'll see a huge difference between keeping it on 3 hours a day or 12 but I wouldn't go much over 12 it does help them to be in the dark sometimes.

12/12 is best. Sunlight or daylight CFL, 6500K color temp.

so it doesnt matter if it has 3 hours or 6 hours of light? also does the light half to be direct, or can it be like a dim sunshine light that fills the room, or a normal celling light from the room work?

Direct light is better then indirect light from the sun. You can do your own experimentation on what light cycle works for you I just haven't seen any real difference when I keep it on for 6 compared to 12.

So, a fc sitting on a windowsill getting quite a bit of indirect light is bad? I thought direct sunlight was bad? I've got two cakes and its day 8 or 9 and they still aren't pinning. Just getting bigger, sort of.

No, no light is bad. All light is good. More light is better. If it's the right light- which daylight is.

Didn't mean to confuse anyone with my earlier post I meant say to use direct light from another source like cfls instead of indirect sunlight don't put them in direct sunlight. I used indirect sunlight for awhile but really saw my pinsets get much better when I started putting daylight cfl bulbs about a foot over my grow.
