Tripod Cakes

Planning on trying out the chronic tek. Wondering if instead of placing the cakes on risers if I could stick three sewing pins into the cake to support it like a tripod. This would allow much more FAE for the cakes and lessen the chances of the cake tipping over in the jar when inspecting it for pins haha. I'm just worried about how this would effect the cake and if serious bruising could cake place. Then again they are only sewing needles.

put cakes in FC then leave alone you dont need to check for pins you should only be opening it to harvest
when you play with cakes you can abort them

No I'm using the chronic tek. Putting the cakes on risers in upside down quart jar. Holes are poked in the lids of the quart jars to allow FAE. I'm not interested in suggestions of how you think I should grow them. I'm interested in finding out if the sewing needles would work. I've done the chronic tek in the past but messing around with the risers was a pain in the ass. Plus the shelf in my closet if a little off kilter and the cakes will likely tip over.

Haha I've been doing this for years now and I'm trying a different approach from casings due to my recent move and lack of space to set up my martha. Your response was just completely off topic and not helpful in any sort of way. It didn't address the whole point of my post whatsoever. So if anyone has anything helpful to say please feel free get at me. No disrespect intended there guy.

I was going to try making PF cake kebabs, which would entail skewering the cakes and suspending them a few inches above the perlite.
But I pussied out. I fruited as suggested by most conventional teks.

you could do up the jars with a verm core so you could easily kebab them. would be funny and thats the only way I would do it. I don't like the idea of impaling my children, call it a personal thing.

Exactly how I felt. I had the skewer made and all, but I just couldn't get myself to stab my hard work.

my thought was to make PF cakes with a metal washer in the middle, tied to some sort of sturdy heat-resistant wire. the wire could be wrapped together on the top vermiculite layer, and ready to hang the cakes once they would be birthed.
then hang them all from the lid of FC (adjustable), starting at say 2 inches above the perlite.
jokefox did help in saying that it could hurt the cakes. (the action of stabbing and tearing some mycelium)

Yeah thats what I'm worried about. However, I dont feel that putting three incredibly thin sewing needles could hurt the cakes all too bad, or even show any significant bruising. So long as they are sterile of course.

Even if the pins you are putting into the substrate ARE sterile, remember that as soon as you birth that cake IT is not. With this method, you might experience contamination from those points as you have penetrated the solid mycelial layer and pushed possible contaminated surface into the cake which may or may not be completely colonized. Even if it is, cakes have been known to generate their own heat above the ambient temperatures of the room which may create an environment for potential competitor molds to gain a foothold. It may not happen at first, you may get a few successful flushes, but if they contaminate as the cake ages and grows weaker, I'd be willing to bet they contaminate in those spots. Do a trial side by side of some which do stand on a tripod VS those which don't. See which ones work the best.

Give it a go dude!
I saw the in-jar tek described, and I think that I will try it some time for fun.
Good Luck!
