Wasn't their language cuneiform? I'm not sure another knows how to speak it, just like Egyptologists can read hieroglyphs but can't speak it, aye?

Thats the idea that i got too.
and it makes me wonder about the legitness of the movie 4th kind since the sumerian language  is "spoken" in the movie, and translated into english saying things like : I am the enforcer of will. I am god. Destroy.. etc.
:bigjoint:

That movie isn't even a little bit legit.

anyway i always thought the same thing about it no one knowing how to speak it, but i'm not an expert  if you find out you can speak it let us know so we can learn to?

Sure thing

Is that even a question...Because not only would you be speaking the oldest language in known civilization...It would probably sound pretty kool :pipesmoke:

Here are some good links to check out:-

Hope they are useful.

Difficult to imagine when they were among the first to pretty much kick off civilization (along with the Ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, etc) and as a very spiritual people (you'd imagine) they most likely intertwined their passion in their language; which one would imagine is extremely different from most "popular modern languages." Either way you'd imagine most would admire it, I know it's likely I would, but then again I'm always up for surprises

i don't think its difficult at all to imagine the first written language being less than graceful. perhaps there was a spoken language that had more to it. but i imagine there could have been trouble translating it into writing for the first time ever, making the literal translations of the writing not read so well.

it could also be the most beautiful language ever for all i know. i was just being the devil's advocate a little bit, because i see no reason to think either way.

I think they actually discovered some carvings in china recently that are supposed to contain writing that is a couple thousand years older than cuneiform. I don't know if it's been verified though.

Exactly, but I tend to give the benefit of the doubt in human potential

Nonetheless, I'd kill to have a gal like this speak into my ears while overlooking the Nile river amidst a classical red sky.
Too bad that'll never happen, at least in this life (if one believes like that  )

Cuneiform script (pronounced /kjuːˈniː.ɨfɔrm/ kew-NEE-i-form or /ˈkjuːnɨfɔrm/ KEW-ni-form) is the earliest known writing system in the world.[1] Cuneiform writing emerged in the Sumerian civilization of southern Iraq around the 34th century BC[2] during the middle Uruk period, beginning as a pictographic system of writing. Cuneiform was the most widespread and historically significant writing system in the Ancient Near East.[

edit: oh now i get it. you are referring to advanced civilizations we don't know about...

This is a tough one:
Sumerian is a partially dead language. All of the original speakers disappeared before modern times and remains of their written language (found on pottery, temples, mountains.. etc) have been translated into the language of the translator but this does not reveal how the actually words were pronounced. Some modern scholars have made educated guesses as to what the actual words sounded like but the exact sounds have been lost to time. Also Sumeria (Mesopotamia((The land between two rivers))) Was not isolated and was inhabited by many cultures in ancient times so the actual language might have changed even when the cuneiform did not because many cultures in the ancient near east (Assyrians, Hittites) adopted the same writing system for their native tongue.
Also (and this is my own feelings) if you want to learn for spiritual purposes it is not necessary and it is better to use your native language as it is easier to convey your feelings and spirits will understand it
