Drying Question
    #13028340 - 08/09/10 06:46 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I have been storing my mushrooms in a ziplock bag, but i haven't dessicated them because we ran out of damp rid, and i keep forgetting to grab a bunch of silica gel from the shoe store and i was JUST there.

Anyways, im just wondering if all of my mushrooms are losing potency, because im not sure if drying is to prevent oxidation or maybe mold? Help me out.

EDIT: They are fan dried.

thanks

Drying is to prevent both oxidation and mold/rotting. If they are cracker dry you don't always need to use desiccant in the bag with them. I personally just put them in my dehydrator till there totally dry bag them up and put them in the fridge. If they aren't totally dry I'm sure they'll be fine for a day but I'd get some desiccant or a dehydrator to dry them properly.

If they're not totally dry leave em out on the fan- a window sill, a shoebox somewhere, anything.  Just don't bag em unless they're really dry.

can't believe they haven't rotted inside a plastic bag in a few weeks

but yeah, what pipedope said- if they aren't disgusting yet then frickin DRY them

some people say fresh are the best
but if you plan on hanging onto them for more than a few days

IT'S DRY OR DIE, BABY!

You can use silica cat litter.

You can also put them in the oven with the door open on a really low setting. I did mine at 120-140F for 2 hours. Nice and cracker-liscious.

I stuck two silica gel packets(from shoes) in the rim of my lava lamp! After a few hours if the paper doesnt burn i think it will be all rejuvenated.

Silica can hold up to 40% of its weight in water. Do you think you have enough to make a difference in your mush?

Buy a bag of damp rid, it's worth the three bucks.
